Sania to compete in Bangalore Open

Bangalore, Jan 10 (UNI) India's Sania Mirza will be among the 30 ranked players in action in the 600,000 dollars Bangalore Open WTA tour to be held at Kingfisher Signature Tennis Stadium here from March 3 to 9.

Tennis legend Vijay Amritraj who announced the event, to be hosted by Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA), by unveiling the logo this evening, said it was the biggest women's tennis event in South East Asia.

The winner would take home a prize money of 95,000 dollars as well as 300 ranking points.

KSLTA Secretary Sunder Raju said two players in the top 10 ranking and four players in the ranking upto 20 would be competing in the tournament.

The courts would be relaid as per the requirement for a Tier III event and would be ready by February first week, he said.

Answering a question, Vijay said Sania can move further up in the ranking if she maintained her fitness.

''She has all the qualities and she has made the country proud,'' he added.

He said in the Men's section also there had been great improvement and current crop of players were sure to make a mark in the ranking in the coming days.
