Wimbledon 2011: Sania crashes out, Somdev gets a walkover

By Biswajeet Panda
London, Jun 22: It was a mixed day for India at the Wimbledon as Somdev Devvarman got a walkover to the second round of the Men's singles event of the tournament after Germany's Denis Gremelmayr retired hurt, while Sania Mirza crashed out from the Women's singles part after losing to France's Virginie Razzano in the first round.

During the course of her 6-7(4), 6-2, 3-6 loss to the French player, aggravated the niggle in her left knee and is now doubtful for the duobles matches. She along with Russia's Elena Vesnina is seeded fourth in the women's doubles category.

That apart, she was also set to play in the mixed doubles category. Sania still appeared hopeful of making it in the doubles category and was quoted as saying, "I could play with solid taping but it's a decision I have to make after I get the ultrasound as to how bad it could get if I do play on it. I don't want to do something silly and be out for six months. That's the last thing you need."

Informing about the injury she said, "I've had the same injury since just before the French Open. I've been playing a lot on it. I tweaked it at 3-0 in first set. It is very, very painful. I can still serve but I can't move and change direction. "I have to see the doctor and get an ultrasound scan."

Meanwhile, Somdev who is ranked 68th in the world will now take on World No.17 Mikhail Youzhny of Russia. This will be Somdev's first appearance in the Second round of the men's Singles category at the Wimbledon. The only other time, when he managed to go past the first round of a Grand Slam was in the 2009 US Open.
