Asia Cup 2018: Khaleel-Kuldeep help India win by 26 runs, survive Hong Kong scare: As it happened

Dubai, September 18: Team India survived a major scare in their opening game of the Asia Cup 2018 as they managed to beat Hong Kong by a slender margin of 26 runs here on Tuesday (September 18).

Chasing a target of 286 runs in the stipulated 50 overs, Hong Kong got off to a superb start as their openers Anshuman Rath (73) and Nizakat Khan (92) put up an opening stand of 174-runs. Hong Kong lost the game due to their inexperience as the associate nation lost the momentum after their set batsmen were dismissed and the middle-order failed to capitalise upon the good start.

Debutant Khaleel Ahmed returned with figures of 3/38 from his quota of 10 overs while wrist-spinners Kuldeep Yadav (2/42) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/46) pulled things back in their team's favour in the last 15 overs of the innings.

Nizakat and Rath's 174-run stand is the associate nation's highest partnership in ODI cricket. This was after Shikhar Dhawan found his mojo in familiar flat tracks with lack of movement, helping himself to his 14th ODI century.

Dhawan's brilliant century could have gone in vain had the bowlers not pulled things back in the last twenty overs as Hong Kong openers pushed Men In Blue on the back foot with their record stand. At one stage Hong Kong were cruising comfortably home in the run chase but their run chase was knocked off course no sooner than Kuldeep and Khaleel sent the openers back.

Earlier in the day, left-handed Dhawan came back to form with a knock of 127 and guided India to 285/7 in the 50 overs. Ambati Rayudu slammed a half-century in his comeback game before Hong Kong bowlers put up a brilliant fight back and pulled things back in the death overs. Hong Kong captain had won the toss and opted to bowl against India in the latter's opening game.

As it happened:
