Melbourne, December 26: India would be happy with their effort as they ended day's play at 215/2 in 89 overs on day one of the third Test against Australia in Melbourne here on Wednesday (December 26).
Mayank Agarwal was the talk of the day with his impressive 76-run knock in his debut innings before patient Cheteshwar Pujara (68*) and skipper Virat Kohli (47*) batted exceptionally well to end the day's play on a positive note for the tourists.
It was a big occasion for debutante Agarwal and the Karnataka batsman made full use of the opportunity by slamming a sublime fifty. The young man was slightly unlucky to have missed out on a well-deserved century while he was caught behind off a bouncer from Pat Cummins. The highlight of Agarwal's innings was the confidence he played against Nathan Lyon and put the in-form Aussie spinner under pressure.
Hanuma Vihari - who opened the innings along with Agarwal - spent crucial time at the crease failed to convert it into a good knock and became first Indian wicket to perish. Pat Cummins (2/40) was the pick of the bowlers for Australia as he dismissed the Indian openers.
Pujara once again looked in sublime form as he notched up his 21st half-century while skipper Kohli looked in his zone as he neared another fifty.
The series is currently levelled 1-1 after the teams won a game each in Adelaide and Perth. India beat Australia by 31 runs in the first Test while Australia came back strongly with a 146-run win in the second match. Team India have never won a Boxing Day Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, also known as The G.
India made three changes to their playing XI by bringing in Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja in the side. However, hosts Australia have replaced Peter Handscomb with all-rounder Mitchell Starc in their side.
Day 1: As it happened:
Mayank Agarwal will remember the day for his shining on his debut. India claimed the final session after the first two sessions ended in a draw. Australia bowled well with the second new ball.
A great first day in #Melbourne! @mayankcricket with a smashing test debut. @imVkohli and @cheteshwar1 Pujara sailing the ship ahead slowly but surely for India. Good one boys! 🇮🇳 #AusvsIndia

Stumps! India end the first day's play at 215/2 in 88 overs. 92 runs scored in 34.1 overs in the final session. Kohli - 47* and Pujara - 68* will resume innings tomorrow morning. Mayank shined with 76 on his debut.
Starc to Kohli 86.1 - Hits on the pads 86.2 - Kohli edges, dropped by Paine 86.3 - Four byes 86.4 - Yorker at 147kmph 86.5 - Yorker at 150kmph 86.6 - Another ball at 147.1kmph, Kohli plays a dot. Sensational display of pace from the left-arm pacer
Dropped! Vira Kohli (47) lucky to have survived as he edged Starc and Paine failed to pouch it in his gloves. Once again the Indian captain was lured into playing for the one going away from him. India 213/2 after 87 overs.
Attendance at MCG has been exceptional today.
73,516 at MCG today, highest single day attendance ever for an #AUSvIND Test in Aust. Quite a few of them have left already, though

Some praise for Pujara from Mitchell Johnson.
Pujara is a Test playing run machine 🤙🏼

200 comes up for India in the 83rd over.
2nd new ball has been taken and handed over to Mitchell Starc. Kohli (45*) is on strike. India - 199/2 after 82 overs.
Tim Paine hasn't taken the second new ball that is available after the 80th over.
After 79 overs, India are 192/2. Second new ball will be available after six more deliveries. Will Aussies take it immediately?
75 overs have been bowled and India have reached 182/2. Kohli - 34*, Pujara - 56* are batting well on a pitch that is offering hardly any turn.
DRS Wasted! Australia went upstairs to review the LBW appeal against Virat Kohli and the ball tracking showed the impact was outside off stumps. Aussies lose their first review, one review remaining.
Fifty! Cheteshwar Pujara notches up another patient half-century in Tests. This is his 21st fifty in the longest format and the man in-form continues scoring. It took him 152 deliveries and 227 minutes at the crease to complete his fifty.
Chanceless stuff from Cheteshwar Pujara. He's played just 8% false shots in his half-century, comfortably the lowest figure for any of his 50+ scores outside of Asia. #AUSvIND

Four! Another outside edge from Virat Kohli against Mitchell Starc and the ball races towards the third-man boundary. The hosts have stuck to their strategy of bowling at the fifth-sixth wicket for Kohli to generate edge. India 164/2 after 66 overs. The partnership between Kohli and Pujara is worth 41.
Secret behind Kohli's success in this series!
A feature of Virat Kohli's batting this series has been the way he's taken guard out of his crease against pace. He's gone even further out today, his average striking point now 2.25m away from his stumps. With so little pace in the pitch, Kohli's advancing. #AUSvIND

After 61 overs, India are 139/2. Mitchell Starc has been brought back into the attack.
Four! Half-volley from Hazlewood and Cheteshwar Pujara drives it towards the long off boundary.
Virat Kohli - the Indian captain - and Cheteshwar Pujara walk into the middle for the third and final session of the day's play.
Cummins has been the key bowler for Australia today for he has only bagged two wickets so far and looked extremely dangerous by brilliantly mixing his pace and bounces.
Pat Cummins has been excellent and has shown that if you want something out of this track you have to put a lot into it. He has hit the deck harder than any other bowler.

Wicket! Short-pitched delivery does the trick for Pat Cummins again as he gets rid of well-set Mayank Agarwal for 76. Mayank couldn't control the bouncer at leg stump and ended up edging it and Tim Paine took an easy catch behind the stumps. With that fall of wicket the umpires signalled tea break. India are 123/2 in 54.5 overs. It wasn't an ideal situation for India to lose a wicket.
WICKET: Pat Cummins takes his second wicket for the day. Agarwal is out on 76.

SIX! Mayank charges down the ground and hits Lyon over long-on region for a maximum. This is his first six in the international cricket. India - 109/1 after 48 overs.
100 comes up for India in the 45th over!
100-1 for one on the opening day of a Test overseas. When was the last time India made such a solid start?
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) December 26, 2018
51-run stand between Mayank and Pujara for the second wicket.
13 overs have been bowled in the second session and India have added only 29 runs on the board.
India 86/1 after 41 overs.
2nd Indian to score 50-plus runs on Test debut on Australian soil.
Mayank Agarwal now the only 2nd Indian make a 50+ on Test debut on Australian soil after Dattu Phadkar (51) at SCG in Dec 1947! #AusvInd#AusvsInd

Fine innings from Mayank so far.
Wonderfully played by Mayank Agarwal. Has shown no nerves and the mountain of runs he has scored seems to have stood him in good stead. Has batted so far like he belongs
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) December 26, 2018
Bravo Mayank!
Trial by fire and debutant Mayank Agarwal passes it with flying colours with a fine half century. Bravo!
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) December 26, 2018
That's fifty on debut! Mayank Agarwal makes most of the opportunity in his debut Test as he notches up his half-century with a boundary off Lyon. Well played Mayank.
Glad to see Mayan Agarwal get the opportunity to play Test cricket and he is making it count 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 #AUSvIND #BoxindDayTest

0,0,0,0,0,0! Maiden over from Cummins. India - 61/1 after 32 overs.
