Cook dedicates Test ton to mentor Gooch

By Super Admin

Durban (S. Africa), Dec. 29 (ANI): England opener Alistair Cook has dedicated his tenth Test ton to mentor Graham Gooch and admitted: "That was a huge relief."

Essex opener Cook has been working with Gooch on changing his batting technique following a poor Ashes series.

He was rewarded yesterday with an innings of 118 on day three of the Second Test against South Africa.

According to The Sun, that innings ended mutterings about Cook's place in the team and set him up to be Andrew Strauss' stand-in skipper for the tour of Bangladesh in February and March.

Cook said: "Relief best describes how I felt when I got to 100. It was also a little milestone to get my 10th Test century so I really enjoyed the moment. The side has been playing really well in the last few games and I've not contributed.

"You feel as though you've been carried by your team-mates, so it's nice to repay that back. Goochie has almost worked as hard at changing my technique as I have, throwing balls at me for 90 minutes at a time. That's a lot of hard work and this hundred is for Goochie as well as me," he added. (ANI)
