India spinner Amit Mishra will now stand trial in assault case

A complaint had been filed against Amit Mishra alleging that the cricketer had allegedly assaulted a lady and outraged her modesty.

New Delhi, Nov 23: Indian cricketer Amit Mishra will have to face trial in an assault case.

Mishra arrested and released on bail in Bengaluru

After an unsuccessful attempt in the Karnataka High Court, he will now need to be present before the trial court which will try him in the assault case.

A complaint had been filed against Mishra alleging that the cricketer had allegedly assaulted a lady and outraged her modesty.

Mishra had moved the High Court seeking to quash proceedings. The High Court had stayed proceedings before the trial court. However, the stay was vacated on Tuesday (November 22) and Mishra ordered to face trial.

The High Court while vacating the stay said that proceedings before the trial court were being hampered. While ordering that the trial should commence, the court vacated the stay.

As per the procedure the trial court will now issue summons to Mishra and grant him a date to be present. This would mark the commencement of the trial.

Mishra can now go in appeal to the Supreme Court against the order of the High Court. There is, however, no clarity on his next move.

Mishra is currently part of the Indian Test squad which is playing against England in a 5-match series. The third Test starts in Mohali on Saturday (November 26). Mishra played the opening drawn Test in Rajkot and was dropped for the 2nd in Visakahapatnam, which India won by 246 runs.
