England Vs India, 3rd ODI, Highlights: Centurion Root, classy Morgan guide hosts to series win

Leeds, July 17: Skipper Eoin Morgan (88*) and their in-form batsman Joe Root (100*) shined with the bat as clinical England crushed India by 8 wickets in the third and deciding one-day international and clinched the series 2-1 here on Wednesday (July 17).

India vs England 3rd ODI: Indian fans gather at stadium to cheer team India

With England clinching the ODI series, the white-ball series ended 3-3 after India won the T20I series by a similar margin. This is the first occasion when Virat Kohli has lost an ODI series as a captain. With just 49 innings, Kohli became fastest to 3000 ODI runs as a captain in this game but couldn't take his team to a win.

Together Morgan and Root put up an unbeaten stand of 186* for the third wicket. India were outclassed by England in every department of the game as the hosts cruised home in 44.3 overs and eight wickets to spare. Root (13 centuries) also surpassed Marcus Trescothick (12) to score most centuries for England in the ODIs.

Chasing a target of 257, England batsman had a stroll in the park as none of the Indian bowlers managed to trouble them. Openers Jonny Bairstow (30 off 13 balls) and James Vince (27 off 27 balls) were the only batsmen to be dismissed in the run chase.

Bairstow gave the hosts a blistering start in the run chase and immediately brought India under pressure. The right-handed batsman looked dangerous from the word go, and it was his early blitz that never gave the Indians an opportunity to put any pressure on the hosts in the run chase.

Earlier, England bowlers produced a clinical show to restrict India to 256/8 after captain Eoin Morgan elected to chase. Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers for England as he returned with the figure of 3/49 from his spell of 10 overs. England pacers too had disciplined show with the ball and never let the pressure ease from Indian batsmen.

With this win, England exacted revenge for their 1-2 loss against India in the twenty20 series. This is also the first victory for England in limited overs cricket over India since 2011.

India lost first bilateral ODI series in 30 months:

India failed to snatch their consecutive bilateral ODI series win against England. It is their first bilateral series loss after 2016 when they lost 4-1 to Australia in Australia. England have thus secured their eighth multi-game bilateral ODI series on the bounce.

Batting became easy as the day progressed but credit couldn't be taken away from the hosts for they batted exceptionally well and made the necessary adjustments against a quality Indian spin attack. The wrist-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal (10-0-41-0) and Kuldeep Yadav (10-0-55-0) were rendered ineffective as both Morgan and Root played them well by batting deep in the crease.

India were out-bowled, out-batted and out-fielded by their English counterparts at Headingley and ended up on the losing side. Virat Kohli (71) was the top-scorer for India while Shikhar Dhawan and MS Dhoni scored 46 and 42, respectively but the visitors failed to stitch big partnership and were restricted to a below-par total on a track where batting in the first innings wasn't easy.

Left-arm medium-pacer David Willey (3/40) also claimed three wickets to contribute to his team. Kohli forged a 71-run partnership for the second wicket with Shikhar Dhawan (44) but after the duo were dismissed under-fire Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored 42 off 66 balls to shepherd the innings in the latter half. Tailender Shardul Thakur (22) then blasted a 13-ball 22 with the help of two sixes to take India across the 250-mark.

As it happened:

Root slammed his 13th ODI ton and he never looked in trouble from the moment he stepped into the field.
