Leeds, July 17: Skipper Eoin Morgan (88*) and their in-form batsman Joe Root (100*) shined with the bat as clinical England crushed India by 8 wickets in the third and deciding one-day international and clinched the series 2-1 here on Wednesday (July 17).
With England clinching the ODI series, the white-ball series ended 3-3 after India won the T20I series by a similar margin. This is the first occasion when Virat Kohli has lost an ODI series as a captain. With just 49 innings, Kohli became fastest to 3000 ODI runs as a captain in this game but couldn't take his team to a win.
Together Morgan and Root put up an unbeaten stand of 186* for the third wicket. India were outclassed by England in every department of the game as the hosts cruised home in 44.3 overs and eight wickets to spare. Root (13 centuries) also surpassed Marcus Trescothick (12) to score most centuries for England in the ODIs.

Chasing a target of 257, England batsman had a stroll in the park as none of the Indian bowlers managed to trouble them. Openers Jonny Bairstow (30 off 13 balls) and James Vince (27 off 27 balls) were the only batsmen to be dismissed in the run chase.
Bairstow gave the hosts a blistering start in the run chase and immediately brought India under pressure. The right-handed batsman looked dangerous from the word go, and it was his early blitz that never gave the Indians an opportunity to put any pressure on the hosts in the run chase.

Earlier, England bowlers produced a clinical show to restrict India to 256/8 after captain Eoin Morgan elected to chase. Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers for England as he returned with the figure of 3/49 from his spell of 10 overs. England pacers too had disciplined show with the ball and never let the pressure ease from Indian batsmen.
With this win, England exacted revenge for their 1-2 loss against India in the twenty20 series. This is also the first victory for England in limited overs cricket over India since 2011.
India lost first bilateral ODI series in 30 months:
India failed to snatch their consecutive bilateral ODI series win against England. It is their first bilateral series loss after 2016 when they lost 4-1 to Australia in Australia. England have thus secured their eighth multi-game bilateral ODI series on the bounce.
If not for Shardul Thakur's sixes, this would have been the first time since the 1988 Sharjah Champions Trophy where India failed to hit sixes in consecutive ODIs. #ENGvIND

Batting became easy as the day progressed but credit couldn't be taken away from the hosts for they batted exceptionally well and made the necessary adjustments against a quality Indian spin attack. The wrist-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal (10-0-41-0) and Kuldeep Yadav (10-0-55-0) were rendered ineffective as both Morgan and Root played them well by batting deep in the crease.
So 3-3 after 6 white ball games. I suspect though that India would gladly trade the T20 series win for a better odi result.

India were out-bowled, out-batted and out-fielded by their English counterparts at Headingley and ended up on the losing side. Virat Kohli (71) was the top-scorer for India while Shikhar Dhawan and MS Dhoni scored 46 and 42, respectively but the visitors failed to stitch big partnership and were restricted to a below-par total on a track where batting in the first innings wasn't easy.

Left-arm medium-pacer David Willey (3/40) also claimed three wickets to contribute to his team. Kohli forged a 71-run partnership for the second wicket with Shikhar Dhawan (44) but after the duo were dismissed under-fire Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored 42 off 66 balls to shepherd the innings in the latter half. Tailender Shardul Thakur (22) then blasted a 13-ball 22 with the help of two sixes to take India across the 250-mark.
As it happened:
It's second consecutive hundred from Joe Root and India have been thrashed by 8 wickets. Captain Eoin Morgan remains unbeaten at 88* as he and Root stitched a partnership of 186* for the third wicket. Root slammed his 13th ODI ton and he never looked in trouble from the moment he stepped into the field.
So 3-3 after 6 white ball games.

You can’t build a champion side around One, or Four players. Time to smell the coffee perhaps?

After 40 overs, England reach 236/2. The hosts are going strongly in the run chase. Root and Morgan both are batting at 84* and it remains to be seen who's going to complete his century first.
After Root, captain Eoin Morgan too completes his half-century. This has been a captain's innings between the two and they have also stitched an unbeaten 100-run partnership. It's certainly going to be a stroll in the park for the hosts now.

England reach 159/2 after 26 overs and they now require 98 more runs to win this game. They are cruising home at ease. Indian bowlers are throwing everything out of the hat to get a breakthrough.
India desperately need a wicket at this stage but nothing is helping them at the moment. The in-form duo of Morgan-Root are looking in sublime touch and the game is slipping away from their hands.
Morgan hits back-to-back boundaries off Suresh Raina to bring up 50-plus partnership between him and Joe Root. England have raced to 131/2 after 21 overs.
James Vince will be mightily frustrated.
James Vince will be mightily frustrated. He didn't play and miss once in his knock, continuing a pattern from his career. Vince plays and misses just 3% of the time in ODIs, compared to the average 7% for all players. Hard luck for Vince, whose chance may have gone. #ENGvIND

After 13 overs, England reach 91/2 in the run chase. Eoin Morgan and Joe Root are looking in fine touch today.
Wicket! MS Dhoni shows his brilliance with the gloves and effects a brilliant run out to end James Vince's innings for 21. England 84/2.
Wicket! Change of bowler does the trick for India as Jonny Bairstow - who was looking in an ominous touch - gives a simple catch to Suresh Raina. Shardul Thakur gets dangerman out for 30 (13 balls). England 43/1.
It's raining boundaries for England as Jonny Bairstow hammers 16 runs from that over bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. England are off to an explosive start, thanks to Bairstow. England: 23/0 after 3 overs.
James Vince and Jonny Bairstow have opened the innings for England as they chase 257. 5 runs came from the first over bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar while Hardik Pandya, and not Shardul Thakur, bowled the second over for India. Pandya conceded 2 from his first over. England reach 7/0 after 2 overs.
Good contributions from Shardul and Bhuvi.
Good contributions from Shardul and Bhuvi. Given the bowlers something to bowl at. Kuldeep and Chahal's spell will be the key. I am backing Chahal to do well today #ENGvIND

Bhuvneshwar Kumar departs on the final ball of the innings for 21 and David Willey gets another wicket. India manage to post 256/8 against India in the stipulated 50 overs, thanks to that belligerent cameo of 13-ball 22 from Shardul Thakur. England overall performed exceptionally well as a bowling unit as seamers and spinners complemented each other well.
6,2,0,2,6,1L! 17 runs came from the 49th over as Shardul Thakur played a belligerent knock to produce most expensive over of the innings for England. India reach 251/7.
Dhoni follows 37 from 59 balls at Lords.

And MS Dhoni (42) too is dismissed! David Willey draws an edge from his bat and brings an end to the innings of India's last hope. India 221/7 after 45.5 overs.

40 overs have been bowled and India haven't even reached 200. The Men In Blue are 196/6 after 40 overs. English bowlers have continuously maintained pressure over Indian batters by picking up wickets at regular intervals.
Wicket! And India continue losing wickets from one end, it is Hardik Pandya this time as he's caught behind for 21 by Buttler. Mark Wood broke the partnership immediately after being brought back into the attack. India: 194/6.

Big relief! MS Dhoni was given LBW out by the umpire off Moeen Ali but his big stride saved him as the ball tracking showed the ball was missing the stumps.
