India Vs Australia, 1st ODI: Calm Dhoni, Jadhav partnership propels hosts to a big win over Aussies - As it happened

Hyderabad, March 2: Kedar Jadhav and MS Dhoni showed their calm and composed batting effort in a tricky run as India defeated Australia by 6 wickets in the opening ODI here on Saturday (March 2). With this win, India have gone 1-0 up in the five-match series.

Chasing a tricky target of 237 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the Men In Blue romped home as Jadhav (81* off 87 balls) and Dhoni (59* off 72) stitched an unbeaten partnership of 141 runs with six wickets and 10 balls to spare.

Jadhav smashed 9 fours and a six in his innings while Dhoni - who has smashed four fifties against Australia in as many matches - struck six boundaries and a maximum.

India lost their top four batsmen under 100 but the duo batted sensibly and constructed their innings well to ensure their team doesn't lose any wicket in the run chase.

Earlier, Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav shined bowled well as India restricted Australia to 236 for 7 batting first.

Australia were always kept under pressure by the Indian bowlers as pacers Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah started the proceedings tightly with the new ball.

Mohammed Shami (2/44), Kuldeep Yadav (2/46) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/60) got two wickets each for the hosts.

Usman Khawaja scored a 50 off 76 balls at the top while in-form Glenn Maxwell hit 40 off 51 deliveries for the visitors but they could only muster 236/7 in the stipulated 50 overs.

Here's how the match panned:

Kedar Jadhav, named the Man of the Match: Talking about his bowling he said, "My bowling is all about reading batsmen's mind. I tried to bowl stump-to-stump. I don't think like I'm a bowler." On his batting, "I enjoy my responsibility. Recently in Australia, we pulled off a similar kind of chase. I just did that again today. I tried to learn a lot from him (MS). MS and Cheeku are the best chasers in the game. That's what we learn from the captain and that's what we tried to do. I would have tried to play more shots early. That's waht he does, he tells you exactly. He reads your mind; plenty of times when you feel this ball can be hit for boundaries, he'll tell you 'the team needs more solidity and you have to bat till the end'. Every time you think of the team, most of the times, you'll end up on the winning side."

Virat Kohli: It was a difficult sort of a game. We did a good job with the ball. You have experience with MS and flair with Kedar. I think Kedar and MS took responsibility, it was great. Ten overs for less than 35 is a great job on this pitch. He set his fields on his game. He was all geared up that 'I want to finish the game.' Kuldeep's been doing it for a while. I have never seen him (Shami) so lean. Got Maxi out with a beautiful ball. Heading into the WC, it's a great sign for India.

Mar 02, 2019, 9:51 pm IST

Aaron Finch: I think we were 20 or 30 runs short. I thought our bowlers did a terrific job. It's not as if they are trying to get out. We certainly tried our best with the ball. I think the quick were good when they were banging it in. You have to continue taking wickets when you play against good teams.
