Sydney, Jan 12: A clinical effort from batsman followed by a superb spell of pace bowling from Jhye Richardson helped Australia beat India by 34 runs in the first one-day international here on Saturday (January 12). With this win Australia have taken 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
Chasing a tough total of 289, India could only muster 253/9 in the stipulated 50 overs as Rohit Sharma's masterful knock of 133 went in vain. Rohit and MS Dhoni's (51) century stand after India's top-order was rattled by the Aussie pacers, however, brought the visitors in the game but a wrong LBW decision against Dhoni got India off track.
Richardson (10-2-26-2) emerged as the best bowler from either side and it was his fiery opening spell which laid the foundation for Australia's big win. India lost their three key players Shikhar Dhawan (0), Virat Kohli (2) and Ambati Rayudu (0) within five overs which meant India were had a lot of catching up to do in the run chase.
Earlier, Peter Handscomb, Shaun Marsh and Usman Khawaja hit sublime half-centuries as Australia reached 288/5 in 50 overs and set a target of 289 for India to chase. Handscomb (73), Khawaja (59) and Marsh (54) helped the hosts recover from the early dismissals of the openers and post a decent total at the Sydney Cricket Ground after captain Aaron Finch opted to bat. Marcus Stoinis (47*) and Glenn Maxwell (11*) remained unbeaten as the hosts posted a decent total on the board.
Here's how the 1st ODI panned out:
Jhye Richardson named the Man of the Match for his figures of 10-2-26-2 in the match.

SIX!!! Ro'Hitman' Sharma steps out an hits Lyon over mid-wicket for a biggie. The ball lands many a miles away from the boundary ropes. India - 133/3 in 30 overs.
100-run partnership between Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni for the 4th wicket. It has been a vital stand but Dhoni is seen having trouble running between the wickets.
100 comes up for India in the 26th over.
India are 99/3 after 25 overs. They are still 190 runs short of the target.
Fine partnership for the third wickets. Super half century by Rohit, but more crucial in the larger context, MSD’s innings perhaps more important. After sluggish start, coming into his own. Not enough batting depth in team, so these two need to double their contribution!

Fifty! Rohit Sharma gets to his half-century with a boundary off Maxwell. It has been a patient knock from the Mumbaikar as he faced 62 deliveries. This is 38th ODI fifty from Rohit and sixth against Australia.
Crucial half-century from Rohit Sharma. The Indian opener has scored at 3.95rpo against pace, and 7.12rpo against spin, targeting the slower bowlers while the Indian top-order has subsided to seamers. Can he take them close? #AUSvIND
