Melbourne, Dec 30: It took India 4.3 overs to wind up the Australian innings on the fifth and final day before rain washed out the opening session as the visitors won the third Test by a comfortable margin of 137 runs to go 2-1 up in the four-Test series here on Sunday (December 30).
Jasprit Bumrah (9-68) became first Indian bowler to claim a nine-for in a Test on Australian soil when he brought an end to Pat Cummins' gritty knock for 63. Ishant Sharma then got the final wicket of the Australian innings to dismiss Nathan Lyon as India registered their first-ever win in a Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
With this win, Team India have also retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the result at Sydney Test, starting January 3, will not affect them. Bumrah was awarded the Man of the Match for his career-best efforts in the match as he completed 20 wickets, most from either side, in this series and there is still one match to go.
India were made to wait to script history as rain washed away the first session forcing the match officials to call for an early lunch. When the match started at 7:25 AM (IST), Team India didn't have to wait long for their 150th Test win. Ishant Sharma got the final wicket by dismissing Nathan Lyon, as the entire team and the 13000-plus crowd, mostly Indian supporters, broke into celebration.
With this win, Kohli - who got India's captaincy in the previous tour of 2014 - has now equalled the record of Sourav Ganguly with 11 overseas wins.
The two teams will now head for Sydney where they'll lock horns in the fourth and final Test, starting January 3. When asked about India's approach in the final game their charismatic captain said
As it happened on Day 5:
Kohli addresses media persons!
Virat Kohli on India winning the Third Test against Australia by 137 runs: We are very happy. Our aim is to win the series. We will win the trophy. We have always believed we can beat Australia. Mayank Agarwal and Jasprit Bumrah have a made a big contribution. pic.twitter.com/hhTyw2gBId

Jasprit Bumrah, Man of the Match: It is a great feeling. I always wanted to play Test cricket. I am really happy to contribute to the team's success. I always focus on consistency. My aim is to always focus on inconsistency, We train very hard and we are used to bowling a lot of overs in Ranji Cricket so the body is doing well. It was always a dream to play Test cricket. I started learning slowly, hopefully, the start has been good. I hope it will keep getting better.
Winning captain, Virat Kohli: We are not gonna stop here. This will give us more confidence and we play more positively in Sydney. We want to win the last Test match as well if an opportunity comes our way. We don't want to be complacent. It's a good thing that I don't read any comment. We were pretty clear that we will bat third on this pitch as the pitch was only getting worse. Jasprit has been brilliant for us, The three seamers have broken a record for the highest number of wickets in a calendar year. Jasprit was unlucky not get wickets in Perth. Team management calmed him down and he won us the test match. Agarwal was amazing. His composure was outstanding. Pujara was outstanding too. It is all about taking pride in your roles which are given. We have to play good cricket to be in the position right now. We have never been in this position and now is the time to express even more.
Losing Captain, Tim Paine: It's a bit disappointing. With an inexperienced batting line-up, you are bound to have an innings as we did in the first innings. The guys are working really hard and we have a huge challenge ahead of us in Sydney. The conditions will be different in Sydney. The pitch was very good. After watching the wicket for 2 days, I knew pitch will crumble. Pat (Cummins) has been superb all series. We all know what quality he has. He has been fantastic for us. We want more guys to perform like him. It's been an interesting year, a difficult year. In the next few months, some world class players will be available. We have to work really hard to win the new year Test.
The winning moments!

Top stuff from the Indian pacers in 2018!

They also end with a bowling average of 23.70. Only three times in their history have they averaged less, and in those years they took 43, 9, and 7 wickets.
This attack is historic. #AUSvIND
Gold Standard Bumrah gets some praise!
Nice that there’s still appreciation & room in the game for the “quiet achiever”;Jasprit Bumrah’s not far off becoming the “gold standard”. Pujara proving that those who critique his scoring rate don’t quite grasp his significance to an evolving India batting lineup.
