3rd ODI: India register emphatic 8-wicket win over Sri Lanka, seal series 2-1

Indian spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal shined with the ball while Shikhar Dhawan notched up his 12th ODI ton as India defeated Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in the third ODI.

Indian cricket team poses with the trophy after winning the 3rd and final ODI match against Sri Lanka in Vizag, on Sunday. India won the series(2-1).

Visakhapatnam, Dec 17: A dominant India overhauled a paltry target of 216 runs to beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third one-day international and clinched the series 2-1 here on Sunday (December 17).

Opener Shikhar Dhawan slammed his career's 12th ODI hundred off 85 deliveries while young Shreyas Iyer notched up his second consecutive half-century in an easy run-chase for India. Iyer was dismissed for 65.

In their run chase of 216 runs, hosts lost their captain Rohit Sharma cheaply after he was cleaned up by mystery spinner Akila Dananjaya in the fourth over of the innings.

Dananjaya reminded of his memorable six-wicket haul against Men In Blue - when he wreaked havoc during second ODI in Sri Lanka earlier this year. In that game, India were stunned by the spinner in that game as they lost six wickets on the trot in that run chase.

But the batting pair of Dhawan and Iyer ensured the hosts didn't suffer a similar batting collapse. Together they stitched a partnership of 135-runs for the second wicket. After Iyer's dismissal in the 23rd over, Dinesh Karthik came out to bat and remained unbeaten at 26*.

Earlier, spin twins of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal shined with the ball to restrict the Lankans to just 215 runs after they got off to a solid start. Both Kuldeep and Chahal picked up three wickets apiece and ensured Men In Blue had a small target to chase.

Both the wrist spinners wreaked havoc in the middle-overs after the pair of Upul Tharanga (96) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (42) put up a 121-run stand for the first wicket.

Kuldeep (3/42) and Chahal (3/46) shined with the ball after the pacers failed to give hosts the kind of start they would have hoped for.

From a position of relative dominance, Sri Lanka meekly subsided to a paltry 215 all out. The visitors lost their last 8 wickets for 55 runs as spinners triggered an all-important batting collapse.

3rd ODI: India register emphatic 8-wicket win over Sri Lanka, seal series 2-1

Hardik Pandya conceded too many runs in the first spell but bowled patiently in the second spell and picked up two wickets. He returned with 2/49 from his 10 overs.

Pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah grabbed one wicket each.

Tharanga was the pick of the batsmen for the Lankans as he was the lone batsman to bat with an aggressive intent. He was unlucky to have been stumped by MS Dhoni for 96 off Kuldeep.

Samarawickrama was the second highest scorer for the visitors before he played an irresponsible shot to gift his wicket away for 42. He was batting brilliantly before he was lured by Chahal to play an ambitious shot and paid the price of getting caught in the deep. Rest of the Lankan batsmen failed to dominate hosts.

Earlier, India skipper Rohit Sharma won his first toss of the series and elected to bowl first. Rohit won the toss and immediately invited his counterpart Thisara Perera to bat as the dew factor in the evening will trouble the team bowling under floodlights and it will be easier for the chasing side in the evening.

Both the teams have made one changes each to their side. Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav has been inducted into the side in place of young Washington Sundar - who is ill, while Lahiru Thirimanne has been rested by the visitors and he is replaced by Sadeera Samarawickrama.
