Guwahati, Oct 21: India captain Virat Kohli and his deputy Rohit Sharma hammered respective tons and stitched fifth 200-plus stand between them to defeat West Indies by 8 wickets with 47-balls to spare in the first ODI here on Sunday (October 21).
Virat (140 off 107 balls) and Rohit (152* off 117 balls) made lightweight of the inexperience Windies bowling attack as they overhauled the target of 323 runs in 42.1 overs and went 1-0 up in the 5-match series. Kohli slammed his career's 36th ODI century while Rohit struck his 20th century and entertained the Guwahati crowd with their explosive hittings.
Set a daunting total of 323, India lost the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan (4) in the second over itself when debutant Oshane Thomas bowled him in his first over itself. But Kohli and his deputy ensured the hosts' cruise home well. Barring Dhawan's wicket, young Thomas had nothing memorable with the ball as he ended up leaking 83 runs from 9 overs.
Both Kohli and Rohit were looked in sublime touch and played their own brand of cricket. Since Kohli was playing an aggressive knock, his deputy was looking almost a second fiddle to the captain. Kohli completed his fifty off 35 balls while Rohit took 51 deliveries to reach his half-century. Rohit caught up after reaching his fifty and started dealing in sixes and boundaries and completed his half-century in the next 33 deliveries.
India lost their second wicket in the 33rd over when Kohli was stumped for 140 by Shai Hope off Devendra Bishoo but the damage had already been done by the number one and two-ranked batsmen in ODI rankings. Ambati Rayudu (22*) remained unbeaten on the other end as India overhauled the total.
Earlier, in the day young Shimron Hetmyer slammed a blistering century to guide Windies to a respectable total of 322/8 in stipulated 50 overs. Hetmyer made most of the unavailability of chinaman Kuldeep Yadav, who had dismissed the batsman three times in the Test series, and attacked every Indian bowler.
Mohammed Shami - who played an ODI game after a long gap - got two breakthroughs but conceded 81 runs from his quota of 10 overs. While the other pacers Umesh Yadav (0/64) and Khaleel Ahmed (1/64) also leaked at an economy of 6.4. Yuzvendra Chahal (3/41) was the pick of the bowlers for India as he kept bowling the tight lines. Ravindra Jadeja (2/66), who was preferred over Kuldeep, too was expensive but got two wickets in the process.
Earlier, India captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bowl as Team India opted to chase considering the dew factor.
Young Rishabh Pant was rewarded for his consistently good show and the left-handed batsman has been handed over the ODI debut cap. West Indies have also handed over the debut caps to two players. India will hope to get more answers for their unresolved middle-order puzzle, ticking off the home team's countdown to the 2019 World Cup and this match very well set the tone for them as chasing 323 isn't going to easy.

Sanjay Manjrekar praises King Kohli!
Indian cricket so fortunate to have one batsman every generation since the 70s to have extra ordinary ability and insatiable hunger for runs. Virat is one for this generation.

Lucky! @imVkohli just escaped a scare at 95 in what could have been a soft dismissal from the skipper at mid-wicket. Rovman Powell was standing a bit ahead else he could have easily caught that one. Nurse had almost had Kohli's wicket for the second time in this game. India - 177/1 after 26 overs
India reach 168/1 after 25 overs. Two consecutive free-hits for Rohit Sharma in that Bishoo over but he could make use of just one. But India still got 11 runs in that over and the partnership between him and Kohli is 158.
150 comes up for India in the 23rd over. 151/1. Kohli 89* and Rohit 55* are present into the middle with 141-run stand. Windies are looking to break this partnership.
Fifty! Rohit Sharma also reaches to his half-century with a single but he reached his fifty from 37 in just 3 deliveries. Two back-to-back sixes off Bishoo and later a single to reach his fifty.
Kohli and Rohit complement each other well!
Since 2016 in ODIs, Kohli & Rohit have scored 1679 runs as partners in 18 inns at an average of 104.9. No pair has a better average having scored at least 500 runs together. In this timeline, the Indian pair have eleven 50+ stands, with 8 of them converted to 100+ stands. #INDvWI

Four! Another perfect cut shot from Virat Kohli and the ball races towards the point boundary off Holder and with that shot comes 100-run stand between him and Rohit. India reach 110/1 after 18 overs.
Another Milestone for Run Machine Kohli!
2000 runs for Virat Kohli in international cricket (Tests + ODIs + T20Is) this year.
— Rajneesh Gupta (@rgcricket) October 21, 2018
He is the first captain to aggregate 2000+ runs in two consecutive years (having scored 2818 runs last year).#INDvWI
Third fastest fifty for Kohli in ODIs:
Fewest balls to 50 for Kohli in ODIs: 27 v Aus, Jaipur, 2013 31 v Aus, Nagpur, 2013 34 v Aus, Canberra, 2016 35 v WI, Guwahati, 2018
Fifty! Half-century for the Indian skipper in no time as he races towards fifty off 35 deliveries. He could have been dismissed on that delivery off Ashley Nurse.
9 runs came from that over bowled by Jason Holder and India reach 71/1 after 10 overs. Kohli is looking in sublime touch.
0,1LB, 4,4,3,6 = 18 runs came from that over bowled by Thomas. First Kohli got those boundaries and later Rohit pulled the debutant for a maximum. India - 41/1 after 6 overs.
How quick was that??
Speeds of Oshane Thomas in his first over of International cricket: First Ball: 147 kmph Second Ball: 147 kmph Third Ball: 140 kmph Fourth Ball: 149 kmph Fifth Ball: 147 kmph Sixth Ball : 147 kmph
Four! Rohit Sharma gets a boundary down the leg side off Thomas as India reach 18/1 after 4 overs.
Wicket! Shikhar Dhawan edges Thomas and the ball crashes into the stumps. India lost their first wicket in the second over itself. India -10/1. Not an ideal start for the hosts in the run chase of 300-plus.
Chasing 323 wont be easy for India. Have to keep up with the run rate as well as preserve wickets. Dhawan’s early wicket is major setback
