Rajkot, October 4: Teenage prodigy Prithvi Shaw announced his arrival at the international stage in grand style as he became the youngest Indian to slam a century in his debut Test after skipper Virat Kohli opted to bat first against West Indies in the first Test match here on Thursday (October 4).
By virtue of a fine century and a couple of fifties, India (364/4) have managed to post their highest total at the end of first day's play against West Indies.
The 18-year-old supremely talented batsman grabbed the opportunity with open hands and cracked a sublime ton. The right-handed batsman opened his account with a backfoot punch oozed class and timing with his range of shots. Shaw played his trademark aggressive brand of cricket and played with a lot of maturity all through his innings. It hardly felt that the teenager was playing his first international game.
It was Shaw's fine display of batting which made the viewers forget that KL Rahul - who opened the innings - was dismissed for a four-ball duck by Shannon Gabriel. Rahul failed to defend an inswinging delivery crashing into his knee rolls and paid the price. He even took the DRS to avoid the inevitable and wasted a review in the first over itself.
Shaw then forged a 206-run stand with local boy Cheteshwar Pujara for the second wicket. Pujara (86) also looked in sublime form and scored aggressively to complete his 19th Test fifty. Pujara, however, failed to convert his fifty into a well-deserved ton as he was caught behind off debutant Sherman Lewis.
Soon after Pujara's dismissal, Shaw too was dismissed for 132 after the teenager gave a simple return catch to Devendra Bishoo at the stroke of tea. India then saw another gritty partnership for the fourth wicket when captain Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane stitched another 100-plus stand between them.
The tourists managed to put a brake on the flow of runs and eventually Roston Chase managed to break the partnership when Rahane edged the former and Shane Dowrich took a brilliant catch behind the stumps to end his innings for 41.
Meanwhile, Kohli - the run machine - continued his impressive form with the bat and cracked another fine half-century (20th of his Test career). At the stumps, India were 364/4 in 89 overs, with Kohli (72* batting) and Rishabh Pant (17* batting) at the crease. They will now resume the hosts' innings on day two.
As Day 1 Happened:
Stumps! India end the day's play at 364/4 in 89 overs. Rishabh Pant - 17* and skipper Virat Kohli batting on 72* will resume innings on Day 2. The star of the day, however, was Prithvi Shaw - who scored a memorable century on his debut Test.
88 overs have been bowled and India are 355/4. One more over to go before stumps!
Ajinkya Rahane's last century (132) came against Sri Lanka in August 2017. Since then he has scored 17, 4, 0, 2, 1, 10, 9, 48, 10, 15, 2, 18, 13, 81, 29, 11, 51, 0, 37, 41 (today)
Birthday boy Rishabh Pant walks into the middle to bat and the opposition captain immediately takes the second new ball. India 337/4 after 84 overs.
Wicket! The century partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli has been broken. Rahane (41) edges Roston Chase and Dowrich takes a good low catch. The batsman even reviewed it but in vain.
India are 337/4 after 84 overs.
Fifty! Captain Virat Kohli notches up his career's 20 half-century. This one came off 100 deliveries. The captain has displayed his calm and composed demeanor yet again. India - 314/3 after 77 overs.
300 comes up for India. Kohli and Rahane are present into the middle and India are looking to head towards a big total.
50-run stand between Kohli and Rahane for the fourth wicket and the duo played 112 deliveries. India have reached 282/3 after 69 overs.
India 271/3 after 64 overs. 28 runs have been scored in the last 10 overs. The partnership between Kohli and Rahane is worth 38 now.

Wicket! Prithvi Shaw's impressive innings comes to an end for 134 (154 balls) as he gives a simple return catch to Devendra Bishoo. India have lost their third wicket.
Wicket! Soft dismissal this and Cheteshwar Pujara (86 off 130) has to depart for 86. The 206-run stand with Shaw comes to an end as India lost their second wicket for 209. The local boy certainly missed out on a century and this is maiden Test wicket for Sherman Lewis.

After 16 overs, India have reached 77/1 against West Indies. The batsmen have hardly been troubled by Windies and runs are coming easily for the two.
10 runs came from that over bowled by Bishoo and 50 comes up for India. Shaw and Pujara have also stitched 50-plus partnership between them as well. India 54/1 after 11.
After 10 overs, India have reached 44/1. Shaw and Pujara are looking to revive their team after losing Rahul cheaply. They are adding runs quickly at a healthy run rate of 4-plus.
Spinner Devendra Bishoo has been introduced by West Indies as the pacers couldn't get another breakthrough after Rahul's dismissal in the first over. India have reached 36/1 after 9 overs.
6 overs have been bowled and India have reached 25/1. Too much has happened in the first six overs itself: Prithvi Shaw taking first international runs; KL Rahul's departure for duck in the first over; some attacking strokeplay from Shaw and Gabriel's brilliance with the new ball.
