Rajkot Test, Day 1: Debutant Prithvi Shaw steals the show as India dominate Windies - As it happened

Rajkot, October 4: Teenage prodigy Prithvi Shaw announced his arrival at the international stage in grand style as he became the youngest Indian to slam a century in his debut Test after skipper Virat Kohli opted to bat first against West Indies in the first Test match here on Thursday (October 4).

By virtue of a fine century and a couple of fifties, India (364/4) have managed to post their highest total at the end of first day's play against West Indies.

The 18-year-old supremely talented batsman grabbed the opportunity with open hands and cracked a sublime ton. The right-handed batsman opened his account with a backfoot punch oozed class and timing with his range of shots. Shaw played his trademark aggressive brand of cricket and played with a lot of maturity all through his innings. It hardly felt that the teenager was playing his first international game.

It was Shaw's fine display of batting which made the viewers forget that KL Rahul - who opened the innings - was dismissed for a four-ball duck by Shannon Gabriel. Rahul failed to defend an inswinging delivery crashing into his knee rolls and paid the price. He even took the DRS to avoid the inevitable and wasted a review in the first over itself.

Shaw then forged a 206-run stand with local boy Cheteshwar Pujara for the second wicket. Pujara (86) also looked in sublime form and scored aggressively to complete his 19th Test fifty. Pujara, however, failed to convert his fifty into a well-deserved ton as he was caught behind off debutant Sherman Lewis.

Soon after Pujara's dismissal, Shaw too was dismissed for 132 after the teenager gave a simple return catch to Devendra Bishoo at the stroke of tea. India then saw another gritty partnership for the fourth wicket when captain Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane stitched another 100-plus stand between them.

Kohli is batting on 72*

The tourists managed to put a brake on the flow of runs and eventually Roston Chase managed to break the partnership when Rahane edged the former and Shane Dowrich took a brilliant catch behind the stumps to end his innings for 41.

Meanwhile, Kohli - the run machine - continued his impressive form with the bat and cracked another fine half-century (20th of his Test career). At the stumps, India were 364/4 in 89 overs, with Kohli (72* batting) and Rishabh Pant (17* batting) at the crease. They will now resume the hosts' innings on day two.
