Visakhapatnam, October 24: Shai Hope produced his career's best-ever effort while in-form Shimron Hetmyer played another explosive knock of 94 as the second ODI between India and West Indies ended in a tie here on Sunday (October 24).
Hope notched up his second ODI ton and remained unbeaten at 123* in the massive run chase of 321 as the last-ball thriller couldn't get a result. With 13 needed from the final over, Umesh (1/78) ended up conceding 12 runs as Hope got a boundary on the final ball when the tourists needed 5. India captain Virat Kohli couldn't hide his frustration as batsman got a boundary to level the scores.
Openers Kieran Powell (18) and Chandrapaul Hemraj (32) gave their team a decent start in the run chase before Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav gave the tourists quick three quick jolts. But
The batting exploits of Hope and Hetmyer ensured the visitors remained ahead in the run chase, however, the Indian bowlers pulled things back in the final overs to contain the tourists. The duo stitched a partnership of 143 for the fourth wicket and kept themselves in the hunt. Had the duo overhauled the target, it would have been their biggest-ever run chase in the fifty-over format.
Kuldeep Yadav (3/67) was the pick of the bowlers for the Indians as the chinaman picked up three wickets and brought the hosts back in the game after getting the wicket of Rovman Powell (18). Yuzvendra Chahal (1/63) and Ravindra Jadeja (1/49) also bowled well while Mohammed Shami (1/59) proved slightly expensive as bowling seemed tough after the dew factor came into play.
Earlier, India captain Virat Kohli became the fastest man to reach 10,000 ODI runs and slammed his second consecutive century in the series as India reached 321/6 batting first.
Kohli (157* off 126 balls) and Ambati Rayudu (73 off 80 deliveries) were the top scorers for the hosts after openers - Rohit Sharma (4) and Shikhar Dhawan (29) - were dismissed cheaply in the first powerplay.
MS Dhoni (20), Rishabh Pant (17) and Ravindra Jadeja (13) failed to live up to the reputation in the middle overs on a track where batting wasn't easy in the first innings.
India scored 100 runs in the final 10 overs with Kohli scoring the bulk of runs for the hosts after captain Kohli elected to bat first after winning the toss. It was his batting exploit in the final 10 overs that took India to a respectable total. It seemed the hosts had scored 25-30 extra runs but the track became conducive of batting in the second innings. India must now be mulling that they should have opted to chase.
As it happened:
Virat Kohli, Man of the Match: It was a great game of cricket, great to be part of it. Full house and Windies showed great fight. Beautiful partnership between both those guys and in the end it was a fair result. I'm pretty proud of my milestone.
