Kolkata, Nov 4: Kuldeep Yadav and Dinesh Karthik shined as India defeated West Indies by 5 wickets in a low-scoring T20I encounter as hosts went 1-0 up in the three-match series here on Sunday (November 4) at Eden Gardens.

Chasing a target of 110 runs, India were off to a disastrous start as they lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma (6), Shikhar Dhawan (3) and Rishabh Pant (1) in the powerplay. KL Rahul (16) and Manish Pandey (19) were also dismissed in the tricky run chase.

Eventually, India reached home in 17.5 overs with Karthik (31*) and Krunal Pandya (21* off 9) hitting the winning runs for the hosts.

Karthik, who leads the local IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the same venue -showed his experience and composure after the top-order crumbled. The Tamil Nadu cricketer ensured his team didn't face too much of trouble in the run chase in the chase.

Oshane Thomas (2/21) and Carlos Brathwaite (4-1-11-2) rattled the Indian top-order with their fiery spells with the new ball. Khary Pierre (1/16) also bowled well in the middle over and dismissed Pandey off his own delivery to put a brake on India's charge.

Pandey and Karthik revived the hosts after top-four were removed quickly. The duo stitched a crucial 37-run partnership for the fifth wicket and steered the hosts out of trouble. By the time Pandey was dismissed, India were already in control and Pandya did the rest.

India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite. His pacers justified the decision to bowl first as they rocked the visitors' top-order on a strip that was supporting the pacers.

India played two debutants in Krunal Pandya and Khaleel Ahmed while the Windies have handed the debut caps to three players i.e. Oshane Thomas, Fabian Allen, and Kharry Pierre. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal - were not a part of the side tonight. Umesh has been inducted into the side in place of unfit Bhuvneshwar.

West Indies tour of India has entered its final leg as the three-match T20I series. This is the first game India played sans MS Dhoni - who has not been included in the squad for the T20I series. India captain Virat Kohli - who will 30 within a few hours - is also not part of the T20 side.

Windies have had a forgettable tour so far but the reigning T20 champions but their effort with the bat was a tad disappointing with the bat as 110 wasn't going to be a tough total. However, the brilliance of debutant Thomas kept the visitors in the hunt.

It has been a clinical bowling effort from the Indians. The pacers started pretty well in the powerplay by getting three early wickets and later the spinners capitalised upon the good start and never allowed the visitors to free their hands. Windies batsmen also played some irresponsible strokes and gifted their wickets away. India now require 110 runs to win this one.
