Kolkata, Nov 4: Kuldeep Yadav and Dinesh Karthik shined as India defeated West Indies by 5 wickets in a low-scoring T20I encounter as hosts went 1-0 up in the three-match series here on Sunday (November 4) at Eden Gardens.
Chasing a target of 110 runs, India were off to a disastrous start as they lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma (6), Shikhar Dhawan (3) and Rishabh Pant (1) in the powerplay. KL Rahul (16) and Manish Pandey (19) were also dismissed in the tricky run chase.
Eventually, India reached home in 17.5 overs with Karthik (31*) and Krunal Pandya (21* off 9) hitting the winning runs for the hosts.
Karthik, who leads the local IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the same venue -showed his experience and composure after the top-order crumbled. The Tamil Nadu cricketer ensured his team didn't face too much of trouble in the run chase in the chase.
Oshane Thomas (2/21) and Carlos Brathwaite (4-1-11-2) rattled the Indian top-order with their fiery spells with the new ball. Khary Pierre (1/16) also bowled well in the middle over and dismissed Pandey off his own delivery to put a brake on India's charge.
Pandey and Karthik revived the hosts after top-four were removed quickly. The duo stitched a crucial 37-run partnership for the fifth wicket and steered the hosts out of trouble. By the time Pandey was dismissed, India were already in control and Pandya did the rest.
India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite. His pacers justified the decision to bowl first as they rocked the visitors' top-order on a strip that was supporting the pacers.
India played two debutants in Krunal Pandya and Khaleel Ahmed while the Windies have handed the debut caps to three players i.e. Oshane Thomas, Fabian Allen, and Kharry Pierre. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal - were not a part of the side tonight. Umesh has been inducted into the side in place of unfit Bhuvneshwar.
West Indies tour of India has entered its final leg as the three-match T20I series. This is the first game India played sans MS Dhoni - who has not been included in the squad for the T20I series. India captain Virat Kohli - who will 30 within a few hours - is also not part of the T20 side.
Windies have had a forgettable tour so far but the reigning T20 champions but their effort with the bat was a tad disappointing with the bat as 110 wasn't going to be a tough total. However, the brilliance of debutant Thomas kept the visitors in the hunt.
As it happened:
Another DK Special at Eden Gardens!
Keep calm and believe in @DineshKarthik 👑

It's all over! India have beaten West Indie by 5 wickets with 13 balls to spare. Dinesh Karthik (31* off 34) and Krunal Pandya (21* off 9) ensured the hosts come out victorious in a low-scoring game. India recovered from the early jolts.
Four! Krunal Pandya gets a boundary on the final ball of the 16th over. Those were the first T20I runs from the debutant. India are 95/4 after 16. They are 16 short of winning this one.
Wicket! India lost their fifth wicket in the run chase. Manish Pandey departs for 19 as he's been caught by Pierre off his own delivery. Maiden T20I wicket for the debutant. India are 83/5 after 15 overs.
India are 54/4 after 10 overs, they still require 56 more runs to win this game from 60 balls.
Why the batsmen have troubled in this match so far.
The batsmen in this match have struggled to time the ball. In the first 6 overs of both innings put together, the batsmen have made 'good connection' to just 8% of the deliveries, significantly lower than overall average of 22% in the powerplay in T20I history.#INDvWI

Aakash Chopra wants Thomas to be fined for overspeeding!
Oshane Thomas should be fined for over speeding 😐🙈 only one ball below 140kmp tonight. Would love to see him in the #IPL this season. #IndvWI

Cracks in India's batting order already exposed!
If West Indies’s top order batting was insane, India’s is plain nuts. Poor, poor shot by Rahul. Four wickets lost and the team finds itself in a hole

Game still in Windies' hands!
Game on now! India need to keep wickets against the few overs of pace left because there is 8 overs of spin to follow
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) November 4, 2018
Wicket! KL Rahul falls for 16 as he tried to pull Brathwaite but finds the fielder in the deep. There wasn't a need to play that shot as he was the settled batsman. Two in two overs for the Windies skipper as he perfectly sets up Rahul. The visitors are at the top in this low scoring game. India are 45/4 in 7.3 overs.
Oho, India struggling on pitch that has some wakward bounce. Three early wickets gives West Indies some hope. Still think India will win, but the tail’s long. Substantial partnership needed now
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) November 4, 2018
Wicket! Rishabh Pant (1) throws his wicket away as India lose their third wicket. The left-handed batsman got a leading edge of his bat and Darren Bravo took a simple catch inside the 15-yard circle. Brathwaite gets a wicket in his first over. India - 35/3 in 5.4 overs. The hosts are also matching the visitors in the batting department so far.
After 5 overs, India have reached 32/2. It has been tight bowling from the visitors, especially Oshane Thomas who is troubling the batsmen with his pace.
Some praise for Oshane Thomas!
Now this is proper pace. Oshane Thomas. Troubling good batsmen with sheer speed.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) November 4, 2018
Wicket! Shikhar Dhawan has been cleaned up by Oshane Thomas for 3. There was a big gap between bat and pads and as Sunil Gavaskar in the commentary box said, a truck could have entered the gap. India - 16/2. They are in trouble now.
Wicket! Rohit Sharma (6) gets a faint-edge off Oshane Thomas but the umpire didn't rule in Windies' favour. Everyone in the bowling side looked confident and they went upstairs quickly to review it. Ultra-edge confirmed there was a nick. Oshane Thomas gets a wicket in the first over. India - 7/1 after 1st over.
This is the lowest T20I total of the Windies in T20Is.
Three days ago at Trivandrum, the Windies recorded their lowest ODI total against India - 104 (31.5 overs)

Tonight the Windies made their lowest T20I total (109/8) against India!#IndvWI
It has been a clinical bowling effort from the Indians. The pacers started pretty well in the powerplay by getting three early wickets and later the spinners capitalised upon the good start and never allowed the visitors to free their hands. Windies batsmen also played some irresponsible strokes and gifted their wickets away. India now require 110 runs to win this one. Will the Windies bowlers put up a disciplined show to trouble the hosts? Let's wait and watch as the run chase begins.
A boundary on the final ball of the final over and Windies manage to post 109/8 in stipulated 20 overs. Kuldeep 3/13 was the pick of the bowlers for India as tourists failed with the bat. Debutant Fabian Powell was the top-scorer for the Windies with 27 off 20 deliveries.
16 runs leaked by Umesh Yadav from his final over of the game. Keemo Paul smashed back-to-back boundaries to take his team past 100. Umesh ends his full quota of 4 overs with 1/36. Not the best of performance from the pacer in this game as he was brought in place of unfit Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He would certainly lose his spot in the game when Bhuvi is back. WI - 103/8 after 19 overs.
Wicket! Khaleel Ahmed gets his maiden T20I wicket as Fabian Allen is caught in the deep by Umesh Yadav. Allen - the debutant - departs for 27. WI - 87/8 in 18 overs.
11 runs conceded by Jasprit Bumrah from his 3rd over of the innings. WIndies have reached 81/7 in 17 overs. They haven't scored too many boundaries and sixes tonight.
Windies managed to scored only 7 boundaries in the first 15 overs. In T20Is history, they've scored fewer boundaries in the first 15 overs of an innings on only seven previous occasions. On an average, they score 13 boundaries going into the death overs.#INDvWI

7 runs conceded by Umesh from the first over of his second spell. West Indies are 70/7 after 16 overs. It should have been 8 had Rahul caught that skier.
During Tests it felt that Windies batsmen were playing T20.
— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) November 4, 2018
In T20 it feels as if they’re playing T10. 🙈😐 #IndvWI
Dismal batting performance from the Windies so far.
Oh, West Indies! What is it with you and wrist spin?

Wicket! Third wicket for Kuldeep Yadav as he traps Carlos Brathwaite in front and the umpire hardly had any trouble raising his fingers. Skipper departs for 4. WI - 63/7.
Wicket! Rovman Powell failed to read the googly from Kuldeep Yadav and ended up nicking it. Dinesh Karthik - man behind the stumps - takes a sharp catch. Karthik has kept a lot for Kuldeep in the IPL and had no trouble catching it. Powell departs for 4. WI - 56/6.
4 runs and a wicket came from the second over bowled by Kuldeep Yadav. Half of the Windies side is back in the dugout. But Carlos Brathwaite is out into the middle. WI - 53/5 after 11 overs.
Wicket! Darren Bravo looked to clear Kuldeep Yadav over mid-on but failed to get the elevation as Shikhar Dhawan takes a well-judged catch near the boundary ropes. Bravo made 5 before dismissal and departed after playing an irresponsible shot. Kuldeep gets his first wicket. WI - 49/5 in 10.1 overs.
Wicket! Kieron Pollard looked to clear Krunal Pandya over long-on but didn't get the elevation and Manish Pandey takes a simple catch in the deep. First international wicket for Senior Pandya brother. Pollard walks back for 14. WI - 47/4 after 9.2 overs.
Celebrations galore for @krunalpandya24 as he gets his first international wicket 🕺🕺#INDvWI pic.twitter.com/AYFsHS7Y6p

SIX!! Kieron Pollard hammers Krunal Pandya over long-on for a maximum. That maximum was 80-meter long. There are quite a few big hitters in Windies ranks. Expect some big shots in this game. WI - 44/3 after 8 overs.
Tidy over bowled by Jasprit Bumrah as he concedes just three from his second over. Windies are 34/3 after 7 overs.
