IPL 2018: DD Vs SRH: Highlights: Sunrisers enter play-offs with emphatic win, Pant ton goes in vain

Rishabh Pant's unbeaten blitzkrieg of 128 from 63 balls went in as Shikhar Dhawan and Kane Williamson's unbeaten 176-run stand guided Sunrisers Hyderabad to an emphatic 9-wicket win over DD.

Sunrisers cruise to an emphatic win

New Delhi, May 10: Over No. 19: Bhuvneshwar Kumar, one of the finest death-over bowlers in the world, is brought into the attack by skipper Kane Williamson to ensure Delhi Daredevils do not finish their innings on a high and the pacer got the Glenn Maxwell (9) on the very first delivery. But dangerous Rishabh Pant, who got the strike after the two batsmen had crossed each other by the time Alex Hales took the catch, had other ideas.

Pant clobbered Bhuvneshwar to 4,4,6,6,6 on the remaining five deliveries and produced 26 runs and the right-arm pacer ended up conceding a half-century from his four overs. Such was the ferocity of Pant's blitz that a premium bowler like Bhuvneshwar finished with figures of 4-0-53-1.

By the end of the first innings, Pant's unbeaten blitzkrieg of 128 from 63 balls had powered Daredevils to 187/5 in the stipulated 20 overs and given Sunrisers Hyderabad's reputation in run chases and performance with the bat many had already signed them off for it could have been their highest successful run chase ever.

But Shikhar Dhawan and Kane Williamson's unbeaten 176-run stand for the second wicket guided Sunrisers Hyderabad to an emphatic 9-wicket win over Delhi Daredevils in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 encounter here on Thursday (May 10).

With their sixth win in a row, Sunrisers Hyderabad have become the first team in IPL 2018 to reach the play-offs. SRH now have 18 points due to 9 wins from 11 games they have played in the tournament.

Chasing a daunting total of 188, which also happens to be their highest successful run chase, Sunrisers overhauled it in 18.5 overs and lost just one wicket in the course.

Alex Hales (14) was the lone wicket the visitors lost when they came out to chase at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Dhawan (92 not out off 50 balls) and Williamson (83 not out of 53) never looked in trouble throughout the run chase.

The experienced duo was a delight to watch as it completed the chase with utmost calm. Sunrisers' brilliant performance came after Pant's maiden IPL hundred, an innings having a perfect blend of a high-quality and innovative strokeplay, which were not enough to arrest his team's slide.

With just six points from 11 games, Delhi's hopes of making it to the top four are all but gone. They are now certain to make yet another early exit from the tournament.

Meanwhile, Sunrisers showed tonight that they could not just defend small totals but also chase down stiff targets. Two of their most-bankable players i.e. Dhawan and Williamson put up a display of class and big shots - whenever opposition bowlers bowled the loose deliveries.

Dhawan, due for a big score, rose to the occasion with a sublime knock that was laced with nine boundaries and four sixes. Williamson was not far behind as he breezed to his sixth fifty-plus score of the competition.

Earlier, Pant helped the Daredevils overcome a poor start to reach an imposing total. The 20-year-old was unstoppable in his unbeaten knock as he toyed with arguably the best bowling attack in the competition, single-handedly giving a fighting chance to a struggling Delhi.

His special knock comprising 15 fours and seven sixes also more than made up for his involvement in run-outs of captain Shreyas Iyer (3 off 7) and a set Hasrshal Patel (24 off 17).

Delhi decided to put scoreboard pressure on the opposition by deciding to bat but things did not go according to plan in the powerplay. Shakib Al Hasan struck off consecutive balls in the fourth over to remove in-form opener Prithvi Shaw (9) and Englishman Jason Roy (11), leaving Delhi at 21 for two.

Shaw mistimed a pull off a short ball and Dhawan latched on to it at cover. Shakib sent back Roy the very next ball with a beauty that turned away just enough to take the edge to the wicket-keeper.

Pant released the pressure with a hat-trick of boundaries against Siddharth Kaul in the sixth over before doing the same to lead spinner Rashid Khan in the 12th over.

Delhi had crawled to 52 for three in 10 overs but Pant's power hitting quickly changed the course of the game. He reached the 50-run mark with his trademark hit, a six over midwicket off Shakib. He got to the 100 in a similar fashion, muscling a full toss from Kaul over midwicket. The way Pant took on the likes of Shakib, Kaul and Bhuvenshwar Kumar was commendable.

The left-hander was also at his innovative best as he used the scoop shot over third man not once but thrice. Two of those scoops were in the final over bowled by Bhuvneshwar who proved to be the most expensive bowler for Sunrisers, leaking 51 runs in four overs. It was a rare off day for the usually accurate India pacer.

Thanks to Pant, Delhi amassed 135 runs in the last 10 overs. Pacer Kaul too had a forgettable outing as he conceded 48 runs off his four overs. But all his efforts went in vain as the bowlers couldn't defend the total on a track where three batsmen played some cricket of high quality. Together, Pant-Dhawan-Williamson scored 303* runs of 166 balls in the game.

The bowlers didn't have much to do as the pitch, despite being on the slower side, had nothing much to offer. Both spinners, as well as pacers, went for runs in the high-scoring contest.

Delhi would now look for some consolation wins in their remaining games and would thus try to end the season on a positive note by making certain upsets and disturbing the figures of the opposition teams.
