IPL 2018: Mumbai Indians Vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Highlights: Bowlers guide SRH to a sensational win

Mumbai, April 24: Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers put up a sensational effort to defend a modest total of 118 and stunned defending champions, Mumbai Indians, by 31 runs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 encounter here on Tuesday (April 24).

Mumbai bundled out the visitors for a paltry 118 in 18.4 overs but then crumbled while chasing a modest target on a lively Wankhede Stadium track to be bowled out for the season's lowest total of 87.

The visitors missed their key bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Billy Stanlake, who is out of the entire season, in this game but their inexperienced bowling attack stuck to their task brilliantly to restrict a strong Mumbai batting line-up in 18.5 overs. With this loss, Mumbai slumped to their fifth defeat in six matches. This was the second lowest total defended in IPL history.

Suryakumar Yadav (34 in 38 balls) and Krunal Pandya (24 in 29 balls) were the only batsmen to prosper to some extent against the pumped up Sunrisers' attack. Leg-spinner Rashid Khan bagged two wickets along with Basil Thampi while medium pacer Sidharth Kaul grabbed three. Rashid who finished with breathtaking figures of 4-1-11-2 was adjudged the man of the match for helping his side script a sensational comeback.

Sandeep Sharma, Mohammed Nabi and Shakib Al Hasan took one wicket apiece and never let the pressure ease off Mumbai batters.

The victory, the fourth for Sunrisers, lifted them to the third spot on the table while MI remained rooted to their seventh spot with just two points from six games.

The modest run-chase saw the hosts lose the wickets of Evin Lewis (5), Ishan Kishan (0) and skipper Rohit Sharma (2) for single-digit scores inside the power play period.

Lewis was caught at gully off Sandeep Sharma while Kishan and Rohit fell to the off-break of Nabi and left-arm spin of Shakib respectively.

Yadav, MI's most consistent batsman of the season, repaired the damage to some extent with Krunal Pandya who hit a few sparkling drives for fours before being trapped leg before by leggie Rashid Khan who also accounted for Kieron Pollard (9).

The departure of Pollard at 73 for 5 in the 13th over left MI with a tricky task which became more daunting when Yadav was caught in the deep while pulling Thampi after striking 4 fours in his 38-ball knock.

The hosts needed 42 for victory at that time. The rest of the Mumbai batsmen were not up to the task with Kaul grabbing three wickets as Sunrisers romped to a sensational win.

Earlier, Mumbai bowlers too put up a clinical show after their skipper Rohit Sharma opted to bowl first.

It was a dismal batting effort put up by Sunrisers batsmen as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals after getting off to a disastrous start in the powerplay. The visitors lost four wickets in first six overs and their batsmen couldn't recover from the early dismissals.

Skipper Kane Williamson (29 off 21 balls) and Yusuf Pathan (29 off 33) were the top scorers for their side as no other batsmen could really offer any resistance to a disciplined bowling effort from Mumbai.

Sunrisers suffered a major jolt as opener Shikhar Dhawan was castled for 5 by Mitchell McClenaghan in the second over of the game. Dhawan, who was making a comeback, after missing out the previous game due to injury couldn't do much. New Zealand pacer cleaned him up after the Delhi batsman got an inside-edge and the ball hit the stumps.

Wriddhiman Saha disappointed with the bat again as he couldn't even open his account after coming in to bat at number 3. Saha also became McClenaghan's victim as he edged the left-arm bowler behind the stumps.

Skipper Williamson, who opened the innings for Sunrisers, with Dhawan showed some resistance from his end but couldn't get much support from the other end.

Manish Pandey (12) got off to a brisk start but ended up throwing his wicket away as Sunrisers lost another wicket at an important time in the innings. Pandey came down the track and tried to slap the bat powerfully through the off side. He completely mistimed the shot and the ball went straight into the hands of Rohit Sharma at cover.

Hyderabad lost their fourth wicket inside powerplay as a mix-up between the skipper Williamson and Shakib Al Hasan (2) resulted in the Bangladeshi all-rounder's run out. The left-handed batsman scampered back to his crease but in vain as Suryakumar Yadav hit the non-striker's stumps directly.

The visitors' batting chances looked bleak when Williamson was dismissed by Hardik as the scoreboard read just 63 and there were still 12 more overs to be bowled.

Pathan, later, stitched small partnerships with Mohammed Nabi (14), Rashid Khan (6), Basil Thampi (3), Siddharth Kaul (2) and took his team past 100. The Baroda all-rounder also was dismissed in the 19th over while trying to add some runs quickly on the board. He was the last wicket to perish and SRH were restricted to 118 and ended up posting the lowest total of this season.

Jasprit Bumrah (1/25) was the only bowler from MI camp who completed his full quota of 4 overs. McClenaghan (2/22), Mayank Markande (2/15), and Hardik Pandya (2/20) bowled 3 overs each and kept things tight for the visitors.
