IPL 2019: Chennai Super Kings Vs Mumbai Indians: Rohit, bowlers end CSKs unbeaten streak at home - As it happened

Chennai, April 26: Mumbai Indians completed the double in the season as they defeated table-toppers Chennai Super Kings by 46 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 match here on Friday (April 26).

Rohit Sharma led his team from the front as Mumbai brought CSK's winning run at impregnable fortress at Chepauk to an end on a sluggish pitch where batting didn't look easy. With this win, Mumbai have displaced Delhi Capitals at second spot in the points table with 14 points. CSK, however, still remain at the top with 16 points but a win here would have made them the first team to qualify for the playoffs.

CSK once again missed their charismatic skipper MS Dhoni into the middle both with the bat, behind the stumps and also Dhoni the finisher while chasing the target of 156. Their middle-order has been vulnerable all through this season and Mumbai bowlers made most of Dhoni's absence on the sluggish track. This was Mumbai's fifth consecutive win against CSK at Chepauk. Last time Dhoni's Yellow Army prevailed over the Men In Gold and Blue was way back in 2010 in the IPL final.

Having been invited to bat first by CSK's stand-in captain Suresh Raina, Rohit batted brilliantly and notched up his first half-century of the season. The Hitman played some of his trademark shots enroute his fifty. His innings comprised six fours and three stylish sixes.

While rest of the batsmen couldn't do much damage to the Chennai bowlers in the middle overs as the placid track made it tougher for them to score runs as the match progressed but Hardik Pandya (23* off 18) and Kieron Pollard (13* off 12) scored quickly in the death overs. Their partnership of 33 runs from 22 deliveries took the visitors to a par total off 155/4 in the stipulated 20 overs.

Mitchell Santner (2/13) was the pick of the bowlers for Chennai and Harbhajan Singh (4-0-23-0) was also pretty economical. But rest of the bowlers were pretty expensive as stand-in captain Raina used just five bowlers.

In response, the hosts lost their hero of the previous game Shane Watson (8) in the first over itself off Malinga (4/37). The Sri Lanka pacer set the former Australia cricketer and got him caught at short-fine leg by Rahul Chahar after getting for a boundary in the same area a couple of balls before.

Murali Vijay, who was playing in place of Faf du Plessis, scored 38 off 35 and was looking the only Chennai batsman who was showing some resistance. But he was caught at point by Suryakumar Yadav off Jasprit Bumrah (3-0-10-2). Even as the catch didn't look pretty clean the TV umpire didn't find an conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field umpire's soft-signal as out.

While Vijay was putting up a resistance the rest of Chennai batters were falling like nine pins. Finally, Malinga got his fourth wicket of the night in Mitchell Santner (22) and the Mumbai dugout broke into celebration.

Here's how the match between CSK and MI panned out:

Apr 27, 2019, 12:11 am IST

Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians captain and man of the match: It was better to lose the toss, we were going to chase as well. We knew whether we bat or bowl first, we still had to play good cricket. We can't control the toss. It was a great effort from the boys. Coming out here and playing here is never easy. We had to scrape every run and every wicket. We were right there in the game. He's (Rahul Chahar) a confident young man. His execution skills are very clear and it makes my job easier. He knows what he needs to do and what the team wants from him. He's got variations and skills. He's a good prospect not just for us, but for India as well. I was hitting well, wasn't converting into big scores. At no point, I was worried. I just kept backing myself. I knew the day will come, today was the day. It's a massive boost to any opposition if he's (Dhoni) not around. His presence does a lot for their team. When you don't have him when you're chasing, it becomes slightly difficult. They must have felt his absence. He was sick, uncontrollable. It was a great effort from us. We played some excellent cricket. We are not yet there (playoffs). We have to be at it. Next three - two against KKR and one against SRH. As a team when we go forward, we are clear what to do. We want more good days than bad days. We have learnt from our losses.

Apr 26, 2019, 11:55 pm IST

Raina, losing captain: We didn't bat really well and kept losing wickets every 2-3 overs, that cost us the game. We need to take responsibility as a batting unit. Our bowling has been amazing throughout the tournament. 155 was still chaseable. We lost a lot of wickets; in the powerplay and the middle overs. Mumbai played really well. You still need to go out there and take a few balls, need to plan which bowler you are going to attack. We have been losing lot of wickets in the powerplay. We need to sit and decide what to do. Still a long way to go, two games, one or two wins and we go top of the table. We haven't done well as a batting unit, need to regroup with the team. We have the power-hitters and experience, need to relax as a batting unit and hopefully things fall in place.
