IPL 2019: DC Vs SRH: Bairstow, bowlers guide Sunrisers Hyderabad to 5-wicket-win over Delhi Capitals - As it happened

Delhi Capitals have been defeated by Sunrisers Hyderabad by 5 wickets in their league game at Feroze Shah Kotla in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 on Thursday (April 4).

IPL 2019: DC Vs SRH: Bairstow, bowlers guide Sunrisers Hyderabad to 5-wicket-win over Delhi Capitals - As it happened

New Delhi, April 4: Jonny Bairstow played an aggressive knock to set the tone in a tricky low-scoring total as Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated inconsistent Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 league match here on Thursday (April 4).

Chasing a target of 130, Sunrisers reached home in 18.3 overs as Mohammed Nabi hit the winning runs for his team and by virtue of this the visitors climbed at the top of the table with three wins. It was their first away win for Sunrisers.

Sunrisers were off to a blistering start as Bairstow bludgeoned Delhi bowlers in the powerplay to guide the visitors to 62 without loss. The England cricketer who was dropped for 5 by Axar Patel in the second over made the hosts pay for their folly.

David Warner (10) was the second Sunrisers' wicket to perish and it was for the first time when big-hitting Australia batter failed to post a 50-plus total. Sunrisers witnessed a middle-order collapse before Yusuf Pathan and Mohammed Nabi closed the game for the visiting side.

Earlier, a clinical bowling effort ensured Sunrisers restrict Delhi Capitals to a below-par total of 129/8 in 20 overs. Stand-in skipper Bhuvneshwar Kumar led his bowlers from the front as he gave the hosts an early blow by castling Prithvi Shaw's (11) stumps. It was the first wicket for Bhuvneshwar in the tournament and the right-arm pacer claimed best figures in this season (4-0-27-2).

Mohammed Nabi (4-0-21-2) was the pick of the bowlers for Sunrisers and got the big wickets of Shikhar Dhawan (12) and Rishabh Pant (5).

Skipper Shreyas Iyer (43) was the big scorer for Delhi Capitals but he didn't get any support from the opposite side. The right-handed batsman was dismissed while trying to up the ante. Colin Ingram (5), Rahul Tewatia (5) and Chris Morris (17) could hardly pose any threat to the visiting bowlers. Axar Patel (23 off 13) played an aggressive hand, in the end, ensured their bowlers had something to defend.

"The last two games have been the same (disappointing). It was a tough wicket to bat on and since they bowled first, they had an idea about how to go about it. We didn't play that well as a batting side. Another learning - we should come back positive and strong. After the first time out, I thought 140-150 would have been a good score, especially with three spinners playing. Unfortunately, we lost too many wickets and we could not capitalise," said the losing captain Shreyas Iyer.

After posting their first away win, Bhuvneshwar Kumar said, "It is always easy as the captain when the team does well and I always believe that the captain is as good as the team. We weren't sure at the toss about how the pitch would play, but we always wanted to bowl given how small the ground is. We knew that it would be easier in the second innings and it would be a tricky chase, but the start we got was great."

Here's how the match between DC and SRH transpired:

Apr 05, 2019, 12:10 am IST

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, winning captain: It is always easy as the captain when the team does well and I always believe that the captain is as good as the team. We weren't sure at the toss about how the pitch would play, but we always wanted to bowl given how small the ground is. We knew that it would be easier in the second innings and it would be a tricky chase; but the start we got was great. In the second half of the IPL the wickets would be slow and turning all over India and spin would play a big part because of which we need to be choosy with the team selection. Kane (Williamson) is almost there, but we want him to take as much time as he wants.

Apr 05, 2019, 12:08 am IST

Jonny Bairstow, Man of the Match: There was a little less bounce than what we had in Hyderabad and you could see that with the wear and tear of the pitch. It was a good toss to win beause you could see it was good to bat second because you saw what you needed to do. When the bowlers are bowling, they tell you that this boundary is shorter and it is turning from which part. But at the same time the bowlers are different on both sides - our guys are shorter and they have much taller guys, so you can only react to the situation. Really pleased with the start, we have three games in quick succession and we need to keep playing the brand of cricket that we've been playing. We have a great group of guys in the side and we all play in the same fashion.

Shreyas Iyer, the losing captain: The last two games have been the same (disappointing). It was a tough wicket to bat on and since they bowled first, they had an idea about how to go about it. We didn't play that well as a batting side. Another learning - we should come back positive and strong. After the first time out, I thought 140-150 would have been a good score, especially with three spinners playing. Unfortunately we lost too many wickets and we could not capitalise. I needed a little support over there because one of the top four batsmen had to be there, I had taken the responsibility but unfortunately I took on Rashid and got out as well. We had almost lost the game after the first few overs, but the way we came back should be appreciated. The bowlers are mentally strong at the moment. That is really good to see from a captain's point of view.
