IPL 2019: Eliminator DC Vs SRH: Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw power Delhi Capitals to 2nd Qualifier - As it happened

Visakhapatnam, May 8: Young guns Rishabh Pant (49) and Prithvi Shaw (56) played brilliant knocks as Delhi Capitals defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by two wickets in a nail-biting finish in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 Eliminator here in Vizag on Wednesday (May 8).

With this win, Delhi Capitals made it to the second qualifier and set up a date with three-time champions Chennai Super Kings on May 10. The two teams will face each other at the same venue in the virtual semi-final and the winner will face Mumbai Indians in the final at Hyderabad on Sunday (May 12). Re-branded before the start of the 12th season of the Indian Premier League, Delhi Capitals continued their brilliant run in the tournament. They now have one more game to win and play their first-ever IPL final in 12 years.

Having restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad to a sub-par 162/8, Delhi Capitals started the run chase on a dominant note before SRH bowlers pulled things back in the middle overs. SRH were aided by poor shot selections from set Delhi batsmen which could have cost them dearly but fortune favoured the Shreyas Iyer-led side as it reached home on the penultimate delivery of the innings.

Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw stitched an opening partnership of 66 runs before Dhawan was dismissed. Shaw then went on to notch up his fourth IPL fifty and kept the scoreboard ticking but Khaleel removed Iyer and Shaw in quick succession to put Delhi under pressure in the run chase.

Later, Rashid Khan too joined the party and removed Colin Munro and Axar Patel in his final over of the spell to bring his team back in the game. The Afghan spinner finished with impressive figures of 4-1-12-2 and it seemed Sunrisers would be able to defend their total.

But Pant played a blistering knock of 21-ball 49 to claw back in the game just when it seemed the match was slipping away from their grip. The talented left-handed batsman's knock was studded with five belligerent sixes and two boundaries to claw back. Pant amassed 22 runs in the 17th over bowled by young Basil Thampi and brought the match with in their reach. However, while trying to finish it off in style he was dismissed in the 19th over bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and the match once again looked in balance.

The final over brought another share of drama in the tense moments as Delhi needed 5 runs from 6 deliveries. Khaleel Ahmed started the final over a wide and conceded a single to Amit Mishra and DC needed 3 from 5 balls. Once again it seemed Delhi will cruise home without any trouble but Mishra was dismissed for obstructing the field while attempting a single to level scores. With 2 were needed from the last 2 deliveries, Keemo Paul hit a boundary to take his team home in style.

Earlier, Delhi bowlers produced a clinical effort after their skipper elected to chase and restricted Sunrisers to 162/8. Martin Guptill (36), Manish Pandey (30), and Kane Williamson (28) got some decent start but failed to capitalise. Ishant Sharma (2/34), Amit Mishra (1/16) and Keemo Paul (3/33) picked up wickets at regular interval and bowled economically as well to prevent SRH from posting a daunting total on track where batting didn't look easy.

Here's how the match between DC and SRH in Eliminator panned out:

May 08, 2019, 11:54 pm IST

Rishabh Pant, Man of the Match: If you are set, you have to finish it for your team. Next time, I will try to finish it for my team as I got very close tonight. I just try to be positive. In T20s, you have to have a big over. We practice everyday with the same set of bowlers and we see the ball and not the bowler. Today, I didn't try to hit it too hard and focused on timing.

May 08, 2019, 11:53 pm IST

Shreyas Iyer, the winning captain: I can't express my emotions. It felt like I have been sitting and watching for years when it came to the last two years. I could see the happiness on everyone's faces. Hoping for another one against Chennai. Looking forward to the next game. But the start they got was really good on this track. We controlled in the middle phase. Mishi pa was exceptional as he conceded only 15 runs. The other bowlers did well to bowl economically. I personally feel you can't really control them (on Pant and Prithvi). When you stop a batsman like Pant or Prithvi, it hampers their mind and their flow. It was good that both of them came good tonight.

May 08, 2019, 11:37 pm IST

Kane Williamson, the losing captain: It was one of those surfaces that produces such close matches. I believed we had a competitive total after the first half, I knew it would be a tricky chase after the powerplay, with such totals there are small margins, we have been in a position of strength before and haven't nailed it, today was another such day, a little bit frustrating. Delhi played very well, they are a strong outfit and I think they deserved this win, think they will go all the way. We believed it was a winning total and it looked like it for a long time, they started well and had all the momentum, they had some quality players, as expected on this wicket we squeezed them back and got ourselves ahead, we weren't not very clinical with the catching or in our bowling, we weren't great today. It wasn't our best performance, a few things needed to be changed and it could have been a winning total. Warner and Bairstow were brilliant when they were here and they were prolific with the bat, we were without them for the last 2 or 3 games, but we still played very well despite missing them, just not quite getting across the line today. We can reflect back on some games, we had similar matches last time around and we were on the right side of those, not this time though, we were on the underside of those totals. We are building well as a franchise and the development process will have to continue.
