Mohali, May 3: Young Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten fifty and gave Kolkata Knight Riders an emphatic 7-wicket-win over Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 encounter here on Friday (May 3). With this win, KKR stayed afloat in the play-offs race by winning those crucial two points.
Chasing a par target of 184, KKR reached home for the loss of three wickets and 12 balls to spare. KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik hit the winning boundary for his team in a virtual eliminator for the two teams.
Gill, who opened the innings for KKR at his home ground, remained unbeaten till the end at and took his team over the line. The 19 year-old remain unbeaten at 65 off 49 deliveries and hit five boundaries and two maximums in his impressive innings.

While chasing the target, Gill and Chris Lynn (48 off 22 balls) gave KKR a breezy start in the powerplay. Lynn, in particular, was looking dangerous as the attacked Punjab bowlers in the powerplay. Before he was dismissed by Andrew Tye on the final ball of the powerplay, he had already forged an opening stand of 62 runs with Gill.
Later, Robin Uthappa (22 off 14) and Andre Russell (24 off 14) played some aggressive cameos as KKR always remained scoring at a decent pace. While Gill, on the other end, showed great skills and maturity to keep his wickets intact and keep scoring.
The youngster is now the only Indian youngster to have slammed 4 fifties in the IPL before the age of 20. Playing in front of his home crowd the Punjab-lad played some exquisite shots which even impressed veteran India cricketer Yuvraj Singh who took to his Twitter handle to praise the youngster for playing a matured innings.
KKR home in a canter, but victory was more difficult than appeared. Punjab perhaps a bowler short, yet nothing to take away from batting if Gill (particularly), Lynn, Russell and Karthik

Earlier in the day, Karthik invited Ravichandran Ashwin and his boys to bat first after winning the toss. His decision to chase was justified when uncapped pacer Sandeep Warrier removed Kings XI openers KL Rahul (2) and Chris Gayle (14) in the powerplay and pushed hosts on the backfoot.
However, Nicolas Pooran (48 off 27) and Mayank Agarwal (36 off 26) revived the Punjab innings and laid the foundation for a decent total. It seemed that the West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman would slam his first IPL half century but fell two short of it. Kings lost Pooran and Agarwal in quick succession and it seemed Punjab's innings will be restricted around 160.

But young England all-rounder Sam Curran smashed 24-ball 55 and remained unbeaten till the end to guide his team to a sub-par total. The left-handed batsman was given a reprieve in the 20s when Rinku Singh dropped him at mid-on and never looked back. Curran amassed 22 runs from the final over bowled by Harry Gurney and ended the Punjab innings in flourish and took the momentum in their dugout.
Sadly, the second half slide means #KingsXI are out. At various stages in the #IPL I thought they played better than the squad looked. Will need to be good in the auction this time.

But Curran's cameo went in vain as KKR made the run chase look pretty easy as they reached home without breaking a sweat. With this defeat, Punjab's hopes of making it to the play-offs have all but ended while Kolkata live to see another day.
Here's how the match between KXIP and KKR panned out:
Shubman Gill, Man of the Match: It feels great, my first MoM at my home ground. Can't get better than this. It was important to build a partnership. The run-rate was going around 9-10, so that's when I decided I had to stay in there. Even some relatives from my village came to watch so it's great to play in front of everyone. We have one more match to go, and it would be very nice if we can win that and make it into the play-offs.
Dinesh Karthik, the winning captain: We live to fight another day. It's been a hard few days. (On his animated behaviour in the middle) I wasn't too happy with the way the bowlers and the fielders were doing, so I thought I should let the boys know what I felt at that time. It si rare, not many people have seen me angry. If I feel I need to be angry to get the best out of the boys, they maybe. The last over went for 10 runs too many, but we have to give it to Sam Curran. IPL is that kind of a tournament where someone comes in and scores runs for you, so there's that balance. It's a big ground, but we did the small things well. Ran well, put pressure on the bowler, and good execution on the batsmen. It's fair that we have given Gill a chance at the top of the order, and he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Ravi Ashwin, losing skipper: It's been a par total. We have defended 175-180 before but we knew very well that there's gonna be dew in the second half and I thought they batted really well. Starting with Lynny and then Gill played superbly. We bowled well in the first three overs and then it just got a little away from us and obviously that edges didn't help. Massive positives for us with respect to Pooran and Sam. Sam batted beautifully, we all know he is got the ability and he's got the fight in him and he pulled off pretty well.

Emphatic, easy win for #KKR. And many positives too, none more than the composure of Shubman Gill. He is talented, true, but it is his composure that will take him far
