Chennai, May 7: Dominant Mumbai Indians registered a comprehensive six-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in the Qualifier 1 here on Tuesday (May 7) and were through to the finals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019.

Mumbai Indians continued their winning streak over CSK in the twelfth season of IPL and recorded their third win over the MS Dhoni-led side. This was Mumbai's fifth consecutive win at MA Chidambaram Stadium and dashed the hopes of the jubilant Chennai crowd of watching the home team become the first finalists of the season.

MI captain Rohit Sharma once again proved that he's one of the best cricketing brains in the limited-overs format as he first rotated his bowlers superbly after MS Dhoni elected to bat first.

Mumbai bowlers produced a clinical effort and thwarted Chennai's plans to post a big total on a pitch that was assisting the spinners. Mumbai bowlers exploited the conditions brilliantly from the start removed CSK's top-three batsmen early in the powerplay.

Once Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis and Suresh Raina were back in the dugout, the pressure shifted on the CSK's middle-order and MI bowlers didn't allow them to score freely. Murali Vijay and Ambati Rayudu hung into the middle to ensure the hosts do not lose wickets anymore. But Vijay too didn't last long into the middle and Dhoni walked into the middle in the 13th over with the scoreboard reading 65/4.

Dhoni - who also happens to be CSK's leading run-scorer this season - started in his trademark style and forged a partnership of 65 runs with Rayudu. The duo didn't take any risks and kept dealing in singles and doubles till the death overs. But Mumbai's quality bowling unit ensured CSK couldn't finish with a flourish.

Dhoni hammered Lasith Malinga for back-to-back sixes in the 19th over and collected 15 runs. But Jasprit Bumrah once again showed his class with the ball in the death as he conceded 9 runs from the final over and didn't allow Dhoni or Rayudu to score a single boundary. As a result, CSK's innings was restricted to 131/4 and the batting team fell a minimum of 15-20 runs short.

Rahul Chahar (2/14) was the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai rest of the bowlers also performed brilliantly.

In response, Mumbai too were off to a disastrous start as openers Rohit Sharma (4) and Quinton de Kock (8) were dismissed cheaply in the power-play. But Suryakumar Yadav (71* off 54) and Ishan Kishan (28) batted with patience and ensured Mumbai do not wobble in the run chase. Their fifty-plus partnership steered the visitors through and by the time Kishan and Krunal Pandya (0) were dismissed off consecutive deliveries by Imran Tahir, Mumbai were in cruise control.

Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar guided their team home as the latter scored the winning runs for their team and booked the final berth for them. Mumbai lost just four wickets in the process and had nine balls to spare. They will now wait for the winner of the Qualifier 2 in the final at Hyderabad on May 12.

Chennai, on the other hand, will wait for the winner of he Eliminator - played between Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Visakhapatnam on May 8 - in the Qualifier 2 in Vizag on May 10. Dhoni would be expecting a better performance from his team there so that they can set up the final clash with Mumbai again.

Here's how the match between CSK and MI in Qualifier 1 panned out:

May 07, 2019, 11:42 pm IST

Suryakumar Yadav, Man of the Match: It was very important for someone in the top three or four to bat till the end because the wicket was slow and turning. After first innings I saw what happened, not too many players were able to hit the shots in the air. So I wanted to play down the ground, pick singles and doubles. Had the chat after first innings that someone from the top-order will have to play towards the end because it won't be easy for players coming in later.

May 07, 2019, 11:24 pm IST

Rohit Sharma, the winning captain: It was a great effort. Great feeling to know that we'll be playing the finals. Three days now in which we can switch off before the final. Much needed break. I knew we have the bowlers to restrict them. Have the confidence in our batters as well. Was important to restrict them to as little as possible, because it can get tricky against their quality spinners. Was a call we had to make, knowing they have quite a few right-handers in their squad. Jayant is a quality bowler. Thought that a finger-spinner can be more effective than a wristie. Knew MS was going to be crucial towards the end. We had plans laid out. When you restrict a team like that under 140, it looks very good. Credit to our bowlers for executing that. He's probably one of our best batsmen against spin. We knew the spin threat they possess will be a huge factor. Surya plays spin very well. I've seen him at close quarters. The shots he plays behind the wicket, those are not easy shots. Always knew he was going to come good at some stage. We've got a balanced squad. Whatever the conditions are, we've got the squad for them. Have the balance we need on that kind of pitch. Even the batters are confident in what they want to execute. That's probably one of the reasons we've had some success in Chennai because we play the conditions well and understand the conditions well.

May 07, 2019, 11:09 pm IST

Fielding hurt CSK the most tonight.

May 07, 2019, 11:08 pm IST

MS Dhoni, the losing captain: Somebody has to lose, things really didn't go our way, especially batting. At home, we had to assess the conditions, we have played 6 to 7 games already, that's the home advantage.. We needed to know how the pitch behaves, would it be tacky? Those were the things we didn't do well. These are the best batsmen we have got, it looks like we are are batting well, but at times, they pull off shots that shouldn't be played. These are the players who we have banked on, they have the experience and they should know to assess the conditions better. I think we were a bit unlucky at times, some balls dropped right in the middle, we perhaps had to bowl slightly away from the batsmen. It isn't good to lose games at such times, but it is good that we finished in the top-two, that gives us another chance in Vizag.
