IPL 2019: RCB Vs DC: Rabada four-for, Iyer fifty guide Delhi to a comfortable win over Bangalore - As it happened

IPL 2019: RCB Vs DC: Rabada four-for, Iyer fifty guide Delhi to a comfortable win over Bangalore - As it happened

Bengaluru, April 7: Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore were left frustrated with their sixth loss on the trot as Delhi Capitals defeated them by 4 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 encounter here on Sunday (April 7).

With this defeat, RCB have hit the rock bottom as their hopes of recovery and making it to the playoffs were all but diminished. They will have a lot to ponder in the upcoming games and find that winning touch.

Chasing a sub-par total of 150, Capitals reached home with seven balls to spare and four wickets in hand but not before the visitors suffered a mini-batting collapse. With just five left to win, they lost three wickets and the memories of their horrendous batting effort against Kings XI Punjab cropped up. Thanks to a sensible batting from Shreyas Iyer at the top, Royal Challengers Bangalore didn't have too many runs in the bank by then to defend.

Delhi Capitals returned to the winning ways after are coming from three consecutive defeats and captain Iyer (67) led his side from the front with a gritty half-century, his first of the season. Young Prithvi Shaw (28 off 22) gave Delhi an aggressive start after his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed for a golden duck in the run chase. Dhawan was dismissed by Southee in the very first over but Shaw punished the senior New Zealand pacer in style as he hammered four consecutive boundaries and the fifth came in leg bye.

Earlier, Kagiso Rabada once again proved why he's held in high esteem in the cricketing corridors as he returned with sensational figures of 4/21 to claim the 'purple cap'. Rabada broke the backbone of Royal Challengers by dismissing their batting mainstays i.e. AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli.

De Villiers (17) was dismissed by Rabada on the final ball of the powerplay while Kohli (41) was removed on the very first ball of the 18th over when the Indian captain was looking to shift gears. The Protea pacer then ended up picking up the wickets of Akshadeep Nath (19) and Pawan Negi (0) to ensure the hosts couldn't post a decent total on the board.

Delhi would be pretty impressed with their clinical effort in every department, barring that mini-collapse at the fag end of the run chase.

Here's how the match between RCB and DC happened:

Apr 07, 2019, 8:10 pm IST

Kagiso Rabada, Man of the Match: It has been a weird tournament for us as a team. It worked for me today and am glad. On a daily basis, you try to execute your simple skills. It is important to back yourself and I do it. I don't see myself as a leader. If people are looking for some advice, am always there. I have a responsibility at the top of the innings and at the death.

Apr 07, 2019, 8:09 pm IST

Shreyas Iyer: It was tough to bat on. I decided to play positive. I did not want their bowlers to get on top of me. That was my mindset and it worked out well. I was trying to manoeuvre the ball into the gaps. I think they were 10-15 less on this track. Our bowlers bowled really well. Especially Rabada in his last two overs. Obviously, we need to think about the areas we need to work on. It's a big satisfaction when you win games. You get to see the smiling faces. I am doing alright as a skipper and want to maintain it.

Apr 07, 2019, 7:31 pm IST

Virat Kohli, losing captain: We thought 160 was going to be competitive. Even 150 was about par. It was quite dry underneath and we knew it would be slow. Not as good as the last game. That was exactly the case in the first innings. We kept losing wickets at regular intervals - couldn't really explode. Even 150 would have been difficult if we had held on to our chances. We need to grab our chances when they come our way. We can't keep give excuses every game. We weren't good enough on the day again. That's the whole story of our season so far. When AB got out I had to dig deep, the other guys had to strike around me, Stoinis was good, Moeen was good and Aksh too. When there are two seniors batsmen in the deep and one gets out, the other has to take the deep and that the whole idea of that innings. The pitch also didn't allow us to play freely. I wasn't too happy to get out to a ball like that. When the mind is cluttered you wouldn't be focused on the chances that come your way. Shreyas was dropped on 4. There is nothing more to say to the team. We need to accept it. Just play expressive cricket in the games well. The key is to take it easy, relax. We want to enjoy ourselves as a team.
