IPL 2019: RCB Vs MI: Bumrah, Malinga shine in death as Mumbai edge Bangalore by 6 runs - As it happened

IPL 2019: RCB Vs MI, Live Updates: Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians eye maiden victory

IPL 2019: RCB Vs MI: Bumrah, Malinga shine in death as Mumbai edge Bangalore by 6 runs

Bengaluru, March 28: Mumbai Indians continued their dominance at M Chinnaswamy Stadium as Rohit Sharma-led side defeated Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 6 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 encounter here on Thursday (March 28).

Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga lived up their reputation of being the best death-over bowlers in as they prevented set AB de Villiers from taking the hosts on the other side. With 22 required from 12 deliveries, Bumrah and Malinga together conceded just 15 from it and denied RCB any success.

Defending a respectable total of 187, Mumbai Indians bowled exceedingly well and registered their eighth win at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Out of 10 encounters between these two teams, the hosts have only come out victorious on two occasions and Kohli-led RCB came close to winning this one but fell 6 runs short. Had it not been that umpiring blunder on the final delivery of the match, the result could have ended the host team's favour as well. The onfield umpire Ravi failed to signal the final delivery bowled by Malinga as No Ball despite the pacer overstepping.

Bumrah (20/3) was awarded the man of the match for his sensational bowling effort. After conceding 12 runs in his first over, the speedster conceded just 8 runs from the next 3 overs. He bowled miserly in the 17th and 19th over to ensure Malinga had 17 runs to defend in the final over.

De Villiers (70* off 41 balls) and Kohli (46 off 32 balls) were the standout performers for RCB but their efforts couldn't help the side reach home. Opener Parthiv Patel (31 off 22) batted well in the powerplay. But barring these three no other batsman rose to the occasion as RCB failed to overhaul the total.

After being invited to bat first, Mumbai Indians posted a competitive 187/8 in the stipulated 20 overs. Rohit Sharma (48 off 33 balls) and Suryakumar Yadav (38 off 24 balls) gave Mumbai Indians a positive start at the top-order. However, the destructive cameos of Yuvraj Singh (23 off 12 balls) and Hardik Pandya (32 off 14 balls) guided Mumbai to a respectable total.

Yuzvendra Chahal (38/4) was the standout performer with the ball for RCB and it was his wicket-taking ability that prevented Mumbai Indians from posting a total in excess of 200, which was looking a certainty at one stage.

Here is how the match between RCB and MI transpired:

Mar 29, 2019, 12:14 am IST

Jasprit Bumrah, Man of the Match: You go ball by ball and you try to control the controllables. You try to back yourself in the situation. You don't go too far behind, I was just focussing on my plan and trying to back my strengths. I always try to back myself in any situation and execute the plan to perfection. I have always taken care of my body.

Mar 29, 2019, 12:14 am IST

Rohit Sharma, winning captain: I just got to know when we crossed the rope. These kind of things are not good for cricket, one of the Bumrah's deliveries wasn't a wide. Players can't do much. Very disappointed to see that. Anything over 180 is a good score. We know the conditions here and we got the bowlers to get the job done. We didn't panic, we kept sticking to our strengths. Middle overs are very crucial. We stuck to our plans and I think it was a great effort from the bowlers. Malinga has been the part of MI for a long time, you can always trust those guys in the back end. They bought experience into play. We were quite brave to bowl the deliveries we bowled. Bumrah executed well and we just missed a trick in the middle with the bat. Those are the kind of things we need to remember when playing big games. We were upto the mark today. We all understand Hardik's importance in the side. Whatever happened with him, he needed that confidence. Batted well and got us those crucial runs in the end.

Mar 29, 2019, 12:11 am IST

Jasprit Bumrah gets the Man of the Match for his figures of 4-0-20-3. He bagged just 8 runs from the last three overs.

Mar 29, 2019, 12:06 am IST

Mumbai Indians have continued their dominance at M Chinnaswamy. It's their 8th win in the IPL on this venue.

Mar 29, 2019, 12:03 am IST

Virat Kohli: When they were 145 for 7, we should have done better. The last few overs were brutal for us. A few more strikes apart from AB could have done the job for us. We need to be smarter at death bowling. Sure they guys will take a lot of learnings from the game. I think the way they bowled, we can learn from their game. The onus is always on each and every member of the team. I got out at a wrong point of time. Shivam was good as well. I mean Jassi is a top-class bowler. A bit of a mistake from me to take him on at that stage. Mumbai is lucky to have him. And also Malinga. And if Jassi is in good form, it is good for India.

Mar 29, 2019, 12:03 am IST

We playing at the IPL level and not playing club cricket. The umpires should have had their eyes open. That is a ridiculous call at the last ball. If it is a game of margins, I don't know what is happening. They should have been more sharp and careful out there: Virat Kohli lashes out on umpiring blunder on the final delivery.

Mar 29, 2019, 12:00 am IST

TV replays showed that Malinga had over-stepped on the final delivery of the innings. Had umpires been alert it would have been a No Ball and RCB could have gotten an extra run, an extra delivery.
