Hyderabad, April 17: Sunrisers Hyderabad finally managed to end their losing streak against Chennai Super Kings, minus MS Dhoni, as they registered a convincing six-wicket win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 encounter here on Wednesday (April 17).
Chasing a below-par target of 133, Sunrisers were off to a blistering start as the opening pair of David Warner (50) and Jonny Bairstow (61*) set the tone for the hosts in the run chase.
The duo attacked Chennai pacers Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur - both of whom seemed clueless early on with no Dhoni present into the middle - in the powerplay and took the match away from the visitors' hands early on. Sunrisers reached 58 in five overs and pushed visitors on the back foot early on. The visiting side could never recover from that stage with a below-par total to defend.
Warner - who is the leading run scorer in the tournament - scored another quickfire fifty off 24 deliveries. The southpaw notched up his fifth half-century of the season and laid the foundation for an easy run chase. He was dismissed soon after getting to his fifty by Deepak Chahar but the damage by then had already been done.
Later, in-form Imran Tahir (2/20) got rid of Kane Williamson (3) and Vijay Shankar (7) in quick succession but Bairstow kept his wickets intact and completed his second half-century of the tournament. The English wicketkeeper-batsman finished things off in style as he hit the ball for a six and brought his team to the winning ways.
Chennai, on the other hand, had little to take from this game. After their openers, Faf du Plessis (45) and Shane Watson (31), were dismissed Super Kings were knocked off the course as the middle-order faltered against the spin of Rashid Khan (2/17).
The Suresh Raina-led side couldn't capitalise upon the good start as the middle-order batsmen kept losing their wickets at regular interval. Raina (13), Kedar Jadhav (1), Sam Billings (0) were dismissed in quick succession and as a result, CSK could never get going. Ambati Rayud (25*) and Ravindra Jadeja (10*) remained unbeaten but couldn't finish the innings with a flourish.
Super Kings would be hoping their charismatic captain MS Dhoni gets match fit for the game which they'll play at M Chinnaswamy against Royal Challengers Bangalore and once again return to the winning ways.
Here's how the match between SRH and CSK panned out:
Kane Williamson, the winning skipper: Very good performance all around. Obviously CSK started really well with the bat and we couldn't take early wickets, but we played really well in the back half and we took our chances in the field as well. We showed that intensity and the chase was superb. I don't think the wicket changed too much and what we've seen here is that each wicket is different. We always need to adapt to the wicket, and we'll look to build on this performance. Rashid has been an outstanding performer for us over a number of years and on such surfaces he is a big threat for the opposition when it's just holding on. He was brilliant and he was able to take those middle-order wickets. Now every game is different and we need to do the same for our next one. Warner's was a match-winning knock along with Jonny. This is the kind of stroke-making we've become used to when he comes out to the middle. Those two have knocked out a bulk of the runs and made it easy for us. We weren't quite ourselves in the last few matches and we wanted to come back to doing what we've always done well. But again, each match is different and we need to build on this one.
Suresh Raina, Losing skipper: I think it is a very good wake up call. I think we didn't put a decent score on the board and kept losing wickets. Faf and Watson gave us a good start but we could not capitalize. We lost too many wickets in between and that's why it cost us the game. We should have looked for partnerships and should have rotated our strike better. Hence, we were 30 runs short. He (MS Dhoni) is feeling better. His back was stiff. Probably he will play in the next game against RCB. He (Imran Tahir) has been giving us breakthroughs. You just throw the ball to him and he delivers. He has been bowling really well. As long as senior players are there, you just need to do well as a unit.
David Warner, who got the man of the match for his 24-ball fifty: Great support, even though there is plenty of yellow they are a fantastic crowd. Some times in our chases we have been a bit hesitant and that's why I tried to bat 20 overs. Against the Kings XI, I thought the wicket was a bit tough. Credit to Jonny, we complement each other really well. I have two beautiful children, one more on the way, and a beautiful wife and I can't thank them enough. I have fantastic support from over the world and it has been overwhelming here in India.
SIX!! Jonny Bairstow finishes it off in style and Sunrisers hammer Super Kings by 6 wickets and 19 balls to spare. They return to winning ways. This has been a one-sided contest for Sunrisers as they finally managed to beat CSK after 4 losses on the trot.

1,0,0,0,1,0! Just two runs came from Imran Tahir's third over. He's come back strongly after getting hit for three boundaries by Warner in his first over. Jonny Bairstow and Vijay Shankar are present into the middle and team would hope these two take them home. SRH - 77/2 after 9 overs.

2nd innings! David Warne and Jonny Bairstow walk into the middle to start Sunrisers' run chase of 133 against CSK. Deepak Chahar to start with the new ball. But there is no Dhoni behind the stumps.
Some heated arguments between Ambati Rayudu and Jonny Bairstow into the middle as the two side descend towards the dugout.
Ambati Rayudu 25* off 21 deliveries and Ravindra Jadeja 10* off 20 deliveries couldn't finish things with a flourish for their team. Rashid Khan's magic with the ball in the middle over made the difference for Sunrisers.
Just 5 runs came from Bhuvneshwar Kumar's final over and Super Kings could only post 132/5 in 20 overs. Sensational bowling from Sunrisers as they pulled things back after dismissing Chennai openers. Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson gave CSK a steady start (79 runs opening stand) but the middle order failed to capitalise upon the good start.

CSK - 102/5 after 15 overs. Only 22 runs have come for them in the last 24 balls and they have lost 5 wickets in the process. They are already missing #Dhoni badly.

Big Wicket! Rashid Khan traps Suresh Raina (13) in front with a flipper. Raina goes upstairs, but it turns out to be 'umpire's call', he has to depart. The Afghan has once again got the better of the southpaw. CSK - 97/3 after 13.1 overs.

1,1,1,1,1,2! 7 runs came from that over bowled by Sandeep Sharma. Good recovery from the pacer after leaking runs in his first over. CSK - 70/0 after 9 overs. 1st strategic time out. Teams must be looking to change their strategy after this break.

So that we get the right balance.
Suresh Raina: We are going to bat first. I think batting first is a good option on this wicket. I think we need to be good in the powerplay. It's all about executing our plans.
