Sharjah, Sep 24: Dwyane Bravo starred with the ball before openers Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad got another fine start in the run chase as Chennai Super Kings recorded a massive six-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in match number 35 of IPL 2021 here on Friday (September 24).

With this win, CSK climbed at the top of the table and they require just two points to secure the play-offs berth. Extending their dominance in the 'Southern Derby', Super Kings have now won 10 of their last 12 encounters with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Chasing a target of 157, Super Kings reached home in 18.1 overs quite convincingly for the loss of four wickets. Openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (38) and Faf du Plessis (31) once again gave CSK a fine start in the run chase. The duo put up a stand of 71 runs and gave their team just the start on the Sharjah track that had dual pace.

After the departure of the openers, Moeen Ali (23) and Ambati Rayudu (32) played their parts well in the middle overs and kept CSK in the race despite RCB spinners keeping it tight. However, they kept striking the loose deliveries and never let the scoreboard pressure on. While Harshal Patel - the leading wicket-taker in the season - dismissed Ali and Rayudu in quick succession but Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni remained unbeaten and took the team home without any further trouble.

Earlier in the day, RCB captain Virat Kohli and young Devdutt Padikkal struck fiery half-centuries in an impressive 111-run opening stand before Super Kings pulled the strings to restrict RCB to 156 for six.

Kohli (53) and Padikkal (70) were going hammer and tongs after being put in to bat first but once the partnership was broken by Dwayne Bravo, the RCB lost momentum and allowed CSK to wrest control.

RCB managed only 45 runs in the remaining 6.4 overs after being in a position from where they could have pushed for a score in the vicinity of 200. Bravo's bowling made a huge difference to the conclusion of the RCB innings as he conceded only 24 runs in his four overs and also added the wickets of Glenn Maxwell (11) and Harshal Patel (3).

CSK had no dearth of quality bowlers with Deepak Chahar and Josh Hazlewood opening the attack but Bangalore openers -- Kohli and Padikkal -- went about striking the ball cleanly.

Kohli began with consecutive boundaries off Chahar but took a bit of time to find his rhythm. The skipper lofted the same bowler for a massive six on the on-side while Padikkal was fluent with his well-timed shots on the off-side.

MS Dhoni shuffled his bowlers but none got the length that could either trouble the batsmen or stop the run flow. The young left-hander also used his feet well against left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, sending the ball soaring over long-on. He completed his fifty with a crushing four off Chahar which also raised the team's hundred.

The breakthrough eventually came when Bravo sent back Kohli, who struck the ball clean and hard but was caught near the boundary ropes. That wicket stemmed the flow of runs and while trying to break the shackles, both AB De Villiers (12) and Padikkal became victims of Shardul Thakur.

Maxwell was expected to go after the bowlers and he did that, striking a six off Bravo to raise the team's 150 in the 18th over, but a late flourish eluded RCB.

A win tonight will take Super Kings back to the top of the table, while an RCB victory will ensure Kohli and his band stays in contention for a top-two finish in the play-offs.

Dwayne Bravo, player of the match: IPL is the toughest competition in the world. It works on some days and on some days it doesn't. My pride and my love for this game keeps me going. Virat was a very important wicket and RCB are a big side. I just wanted to keep it simple. As I said, preparation is the key for me. I practice in the nets, keep myself healthy and use my experience to come up in these situations. That gets the batsmen thinking about where it will go. Experience will always get us through in this franchise. The message from the coach in the dressing room is that we might not always be the quickest, but we will get the job done. We need to stay safe from the over-rate fines as well (laughs).

MS Dhoni, the winning skipper: We were worried about the dew and we saw that last season. They got off to a great start and after the eighth or ninth over, the pitch slowed down a bit. Jadeja's spell was very crucial especially with the way Padikkal was batting from one end. I told Moeen that he would bowl from one end during drinks, but then I changed my mind. I decided Bravo should bowl because the more you delayed him, the more difficult it was given that he'd have to bowl four straight overs in these difficult conditions. Our players have worked hard and understood their roles and responsibilities. All three grounds here are different. This one is the slowest of the lot. I felt the left-right combination here was important with the bat. We bat deep with a lot of lefties and all of them are good to bat at any position, which is why we pushed Raina and Rayudu down. Bravo is fit and executing them well. I call him my brother and we always have fights over whether he should bowl the slower ball. But now everyone knows that he has the slower ball, so I told him to bowl six different balls in an over.

MS Dhoni in run-chases against RCB in IPL: 15 innings, 6 not outs.

Sep 24, 2021, 11:40 pm IST

Virat Kohli, the losing captain: The wicket did slow down a bit. But I feel we left out 15-20 runs out there. 175 would've been a winning total. Didn't bowl consistently. Didn't show that much courage I guess with the ball. They bowled well in the back end of the innings, executed the slower balls and yorkers nicely. We spoke of areas we didn't want them to hit and we didn't do that. That little bit of X factor was missing in the first 5-6 overs. Got to get on that winning run again. This one is a bit more disappointing. The first one we just weren't in the game. Have to show more courage in crunch moments. This tournament goes by quickly.
