IPL 2022 Playoffs Final Scenario after Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals on May 21

Mumbai, May 21: Debutants Gujarat Titans became the first team to be qualified for the IPL 2022 play-offs while five-time champions Mumbai Indians and four-time winners Chennai Super Kings have been officially knocked out of the tournament.

Mumbai Indians on May 21, spoiled Delhi Capitals' hopes of a playoffs finish with an emphatic win by five wickets in the last league game of the two teams. With this win, the Rohit Sharma-led side not just knocked Delhi out of the tournament but also helped Royal Challengers Bangalore as the fourth team in the playoffs.

On May 20, Rajasthan Royals registered a superb 5 wicket win over Chennai Super Kings and qualified for the playoffs as second in the points table. Chasing 151, the Royals reached 151 for the loss of 5 wickets with two balls to spare.

Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday (May 19) defeated Gujarat Titans by 8 wickets in match number 67 and kept their playoff hopes alive. Chasing a sub-par 169, RCB romped home with 8 wickets to spare, courtesy of a fine half-century from Virat Kohli.

In match number 66 of IPL 2022, Lucknow Super Giants held on to their nerves in the tense moments and defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by a narrow 2-run margin in a run chase of 211. With this win, LSG became the second team after Gujarat Titans to qualify for the playoffs while KKR became the third team to be eliminated.

In match number 65 of IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad edged Mumbai Indians by 3 runs on May 17 and kept their playoffs hopes alive in the last week of the fifteenth edition of the tournament.

On May 16, riding over a composed half-century from Mitchell Marsh (63 off 48 balls) and a clinical effort from the bowlers, Delhi Capitals defeated Punjab Kings by 17 runs in a must-win game at DY Patil Stadium. Having posted 159/7 in 20 overs, DC restricted PBKS to 142/9 and kept themselves in the playoffs race.

Earlier on May 14, Kolkata Knight Riders produced a clinical effort to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 54 runs. Andre Russell's all-round show with bat and ball helped the Knight Riders stay in the hunt.

Why NRR Will Be An Important Factor in IPL 2022Why NRR Will Be An Important Factor in IPL 2022

On May 15, Gujarat Titans hammered Chennai Super Kings by 54 runs to reach 20 points, with 1 game to spare and ensured they will now finish as table toppers.

In the second doubleheader of the day, Rajasthan Royals defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 24 runs and jumped to the second position in the points table. Both the teams have one more game to finish.

Rajasthan Royals, Qualified: The Sanju Samson-led side has jumped to the second position with back to back wins over LSG and CSK in their last league matches. With the win over CSK They are tied with the LSG on 18 points but due to a better net run rate, they are going to finish second. They will now face Gujarat Titans in the Qualifier 1 on May 24 at Kolkata's Eden Gardens.

Lucknow Super Giants: Qualified: With 18 points in the kitty, LSG became the second team to secure the playoff berth. Debutants Lucknow Super Giants joined the fellow newbies Gujarat Titans to get that 'Q' put alongside their name. They would now hope that RR lose their next game so that they finish second in the points table and get an extra chance to fight for the title.

Kolkata Knight Riders, Eliminated: The Shreyas Iyer-led side put up a great fight in their final game of the league stages as they nearly pulled off a big run chase of 211 but they could only muster 208/8 in the run chase. They end their campaign with 12 points in 14 games (6 wins and 8 losses).

Punjab Kings, Eliminated: The Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab Kings' defeat at the hands of Delhi Capitals ended their playoffs aspirations. They have 12 points in 13 games (6 wins and 7 defeats) and after RCB's win over GT, their hopes ended for the max they could achieve is 14 points.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, Eliminated: The Kane Williamson-led side currently has 12 points in 13 games with 6 wins and 7 losses in the league stage. The team suffered five consecutive defeats after winning five games on the bounce and slipped to the eighth spot in the points table. However, they've put an end to the losing streak with a narrow win over Mumbai Indians on May 17. They've also been eliminated after RCB's win.

Delhi Capitals, Eliminated: The Rishabh Pant-led side became the last team to be eliminated from the playoffs race as they finished with 14 points in 14 games. The Capitals had their tasks cut out against Mumbai Indians but they failed to put up a comprehensive show in the must-win game and get those two crucial points to reach 16 points and finish as the fourth team in the playoffs. But it wasn't meant to be their evening at Wankhede Stadium.

Here we take a look at the how RCB became the fourth team to qualify at the business end of the tournament:

Royal Challengers Bangalore: The Faf du Plessis-led side had jumped to the fourth position in the points table with 16 points in 14 games after registering an emphatic win in their last league game of the season against table-toppers Gujarat Titans. With that win RCB kept themselves in the playoffs race but their fate depended on the result of the match between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians as the Rishabh Pant-led side had a better net run rate. For RCB to enter playoffs they needed Mumbai Indians to win and the Rohit Sharma-led side won it and knocked Delhi Capitals out of IPL 2022. Thus, RCB were through to the playoffs.
