IPL 2023 Final: What Happens If CSK vs GT Title Showdown Is Washed Out On Reserve Day Due To Rain?

IPL 2023 is down to two teams as Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans clash in the final of sixteenth season of the Indian Premier League at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on reserve day - Monday (May 29).

The IPL 2023 Playoffs, which started with Qualifier 1 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai earlier this week, saw CSK defeat GT to earn a direct entry into the final, while the Titans, who finished as table-toppers in the round-robin stage, got another shot at making the final.

IPL Final rain playing conditions

In the Eliminator at the same venue in Chennai, Mumbai Indians defeated Lucknow Super Giants to get one step closer to the final as they booked a Qualifier 2 berth against GT. But MI were ousted by GT, who won the Qualifier 2 to reach the final.

The weather has played spoilsport in the final already by forcing a postponement as well as one league match and had an impact on one other match in the league stage.

Plus, a few matches saw a delay in start including the Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. But there was a full match despite a delayed start. However, the final, which was scheduled for Sunday (May 28), was postponed due to persistent rains.

Most parts of the country have witnessed rain over the last few days and that could affect the crucial match in IPL 2023. As it stands though, the forecast says there is clear weather in Ahmedabad on May 29. But what happens if it rains and there is no play or a truncated match or the match is tied?

From what point will we start losing overs in case of delay in IPL 2023 final?

If there is a delay, the match can start as late as 9:35 PM IST without an over being lost. But if there is further delay, then the overs will be reduced for every eight minutes lost. Also, the cutoff time for a five-over per side game is 12:06 AM IST (the next day).

Is there another reserve day for IPL 2023 final?

No, the only reserve day for IPL 2023 final is on Monday (May 29). If the match (at least a 5 over per side game is not possible) or even a super over is not possible, the match will be considered as a No Result.

Is there extra cut off time to finish the match in case of delay?

There is an additional 60 minutes or 1 hour available to complete the match. So, the cut off time for IPL 2023 final if it starts at 7:30 PM IST, will be 12.06 AM IST (May 30, 2023) for 5 overs per side game.

IPL 2023 Final result in case of rain or weather interruption

Unless the winner is determined by DLS, the side which has scored in its one innings a total of runs in excess of that scored by the opposing side in its one completed innings shall win the match.

A result can be achieved only if both teams have had the opportunity of batting for at least 5 overs, unless one team has been all out in less than 5 overs or unless the team batting second scores enough runs to win in less than 5 overs.

Meaning, if both teams have not had an opportunity of batting for a minimum of 5 overs, the match will be declared a No Result. If the Final, is tied, or there is no result, the following shall apply:

The relevant teams shall compete in a Super Over and if necessary further Super Overs to determine which team is the winner of the match in question; and

If conditions do not permit a Super Over, or subsequent Super Overs within the time available to determine the winner then the team which, at the end of the relevant regular Season, finished in the higher position in the League table will be deemed the winner of the relevant play-off match.

Going by the above condition, GT will be crowned champions if there is no play at all possible on the reserve day (Monday, May 29) as they finished on top of the IPL 2023 points table.

This is when a 5-over per side or even a super over is not possible. But, as things stand, the weather forecasts of clear conditions indicate that there could be a full T20 match possible on May 29.
