IPL 2023 Rain Rules: What Happens If Weather Interrupts Play in Indian Premier League

The all new season of the Indian Premier League - IPL 2023 got off to a grand start on Saturday (March 31) with the action set to continue for close to two months, concluding with the final on May 28.

The fans to see their home teams at their respective home grounds has returned after a three-year hiatus, making this season an even more exciting one for all involved. But there is one thing no one can control. And that is the weather.

IPL 2023 Rain Rules

Although the IPL 2023 is scheduled in the Indian summer, there is threat of rain on most days of the season. There used to be an odd summer shower, but this year, the weather is very unpredictable.

In fact, the season opener in Ahmedabad was also under threat following showers on the eve of the match. But, the rain gods stayed away and the fans were treated to a full match. However, the same may not be the case on all days.

With thunderstorms predicted in most parts of the country, including Mohali, Lucknow, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, all cities that will host IPL matches, we may see rain play spoilsport. So, what happens if it rains during IPL 2023 matches?

What happens if it rains in IPL League Stage Match? - The IPL 2023 Rain Rules

An IPL match is contested in T20 format (20 overs for each teams). And the match should be completed within 3 hours and 20 minutes including the innings break as well as the strategic time-outs.

But, if weather or any other conditions interrupt the match, there is an extra 60 minutes or an hour window to complete the match. So, what is the extension time for the two matches on a doubleheader day?

For the 3:30 PM IST start matches, the cutoff time is 7:50 PM IST if there is any interruption due to weather or any other condition. For the 7:30 PM IST match, the extension window lasts till 11:50 PM IST. But the cutoff time for a 5-over per side game is 10:56 PM.

For the avoidance of doubt, if extra time is required to be used, it will be taken in the following sequence. In the event of a delayed start or interruption, the provision of sixty minutes extra time is to be used first, followed by the time allocated for 'time outs' and then the reduction in the innings change interval (if applicable).

So, how many overs is the minimum requirement for a match to get a result? As per the laws of the game, to constitute a match, a minimum of 5 overs have to be bowled to the team batting second subject to a result not being achieved earlier. So, at least both teams will need to face 5 overs each to determine a result.

But, if the weather or any other interruptions are not very long, the overs are reduced keeping in mind playing duration of the match. The result also will be determined via Duckworth Lewis Stern method, should the rain interrupt play during the two innings.

For example, if only under an hour is lost due to interruptions, then the full quota of overs will be bowled. But if the interruption exceeds an hour, then an over be deducted for every eight minutes lost.

In case that is also not possible within the remaining permitted playing hours including extended window, then the match will be considered as no result with both teams sharing a point each in the league stages.
