New Delhi, May 30: 27-year-old Ankeet Chavan, who was a promising cricketer, might have experienced a different life if he had not landed in IPL fixing scandal. He would have been enjoying his pre-marriage ceremonies and would have won award and a cash prize of Rs 2 crore from MCA. Unfortunately, the tainted cricketer has been experiencing a complete world where he was not even granted bail to get married. His marriage is fixed on June 2.
A Delhi court earlier on Tuesday, May 28 said, "The defence counsel has cited reason of social stigma to the families of the bride and groom. Social sentiments cannot be considered as a valid ground while evaluating the grounds of bail."
Asking Chavan's lawyer to postpone the marriage, the court said, "Keeping in view the gravity of offence and conspiracy with other co-accused persons, I do not find any ground to admit accused either on regular or on interim bail. Both the applications are accordingly dismissed."
However, the tainted player of Rajasthan Royals moved sessions court. According to sources, Chavan is unlikely to get bail in the sessions court which would hear the petition on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) said, "He (Chavan) is suspended by the BCCI and therefore there is no question of making any payment to him. We have not issued a (winners') cheque to him."
The MCA on Wednesday held a function at Wankhede Stadium to honour Mumbai teams across all age categories from the U-14 level to the side that won the 40th Ranji title.
Chavan played a crucial role in Mumbai's 40th Ranji triumph with 33 wickets. The cricketer is currently suspended by the BCCI, which means he is not eligible for any BCCI award. According to sources, no one came forward to collect his 'prize' as well.
Chavan along with his two other Rajasthan Royals (RR) teammates -- S Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila were arrested from Mumbai by Delhi Police. The three cricketers have been accused of accepting money upto Rs 60 lakh for giving away pre-determined number of runs in an over during IPL matches. The trio were suspended by BCCI soon after their arrest on May 15.
