Cricketers snub but police attend Ankeet Chavan's wedding

Mumbai, June 3: 27-year-old Ankeet Chavan finally tied the wedding knot with fiancee Neha Sambari in a quiet ceremony in Mumbai on Sunday, June 2. As it was reported most of the cricketers and celebrities did not turn up to the wedding venue. However, many police officials were present at the venue.

Chavan, sporting a creamy white designer kurta, a dark brown dhoti and a red turban, arrived at the venue - Kohinoor Banquet Hall near Shivaji Park on Sunday afternoon. The tainted cricketer was accompanied by a marriage procession including family members, close friends, a few neighbours and several cops in plain-clothes.

Earlier the daily DNA reported that Ankeet was believed to have invited several top players, former players and officials from Mumbai. However, the cricketers did not attend the wedding.

One senior player was quoted as saying, "I am not in town, but I don't know whether I would have made it even if I were in Mumbai." The daily also claimed that some of Ankeet's Ranji teammates laughed off the possibility of attending the wedding. "Are you mad? He hasn't even invited me. I don't think I am going to force myself," another player was quoted as saying.

Ankeet, who was believed to be a promising cricketer, was released from Tihar jail on May 31, two days ahead of his marriage ceremony. He was granted conditional bail till June 6.

He had applied for bail on the ground that his marriage is fixed for June 2 and if the wedding does not take place it will harm his reputation and that of his fiancee.

Chavan had to deposit two sureties of Rs 1 lakh each and a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh with the court before he was granted bail. The cricketer was asked to surrender his passport and not to make any direct of indirect contact to any person related to the case.

Chavan along with his two other Rajasthan Royals (RR) teammates -- S Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila were arrested from Mumbai by Delhi Police. The three cricketers have been accused of accepting money upto Rs 60 lakh for giving away pre-determined number of runs in an over during IPL matches. The trio were suspended by BCCI soon after their arrest on May 16.
