Jonathan Marc Bairstow is an English cricketer who plays for England in all formats. Bairstow, who represents Yorkshire in domestic cricket, was born on September 26, 1989, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. Notably, this right-handed wicket-keeping batsman is the son of former England keeper David Bairstow. His excellent outfielding skills led him to several achievements at a young age.
Bairstow made an impressive first-class debut against Somerset in June 2009, securing 82 runs in his second innings. In the following two years, he was active with the County side and made several achievements. Following this, 2011 was a better year for the youngster, as he was selected in the England Lions squad for the tour of West Indies in January. The same year, he scored his maiden first-class century against Nottinghamshire, finishing on 205.
His achievement continued after he was picked for the national squad to play against Ireland in an ODI game in August 2011, but he didn't play the match. However, he made his ODI debut against India in 2011 and helped England reach a Duckworth-Lewis adjusted total with an unbeaten 41 off only 21 balls. Bairstow's another outstanding performance helped him hold the world record with Ben Stokes for the highest sixth-wicket stand in Tests: 399 against South Africa during England's 2015-16 tour.
Bairstow also continued to impress in the IPL after Sunrisers Hyderabad picked him for the 2019 IPL season. Bairstow scored his maiden IPL hundred 114 (56) against the Royal Challengers Bangalore that season. The following year Bairstow was retained by the Hyderabad franchise but released. Even after being a part of the Punjab Kings 2023 IPL squad, Bairstow is not playing this season following his injury.
In 2017, Jonny Bairstow, along with author Duncan Hamilton released their joint autobiography titled A Clear Blue Sky. The book covers his journey from losing his father (David Bairstow) at a young age to achieving his first century in a Test match.
