Shubman Gill enters 'war of words' with umpire, courts controversy in Ranji Trophy

Shubman Gill enters 'war of words' with umpire, courts controversy in Ranji Trophy and the incident happened on the opening day of the match between Punjab and Delhi

Shubman Gill enters war of words with umpire

New Delhi, January 3: A huge controversy erupted on Friday (January 3) when Punjab opener Shubman Gill "argued" with the umpire after being given out and refused to walk off the field during their Ranji Trophy game against Delhi at the IS Bindra Stadium.

A Times of India journalist narrated the series of events in a thread on his Twitter handle in which he claimed that Shubman unimpressed with the decision of the on-field umpire, didn't move anywhere and remained on his crease.

"The straight umpire (Mohammed Rafi) had adjudged Shubman caught behind and the batsman then walked up to the umpire and was seen having an argument asking him to reverse the decision. The straight umpire then consulted square leg umpire (Paschim Pathak) and reversed the decision," Delhi team manager Vivek Khurana told PTI.

But Khurana denied the news that Delhi played walked off the field. "Our skipper Nitish Rana asked the umpires as to why they have overturned the initial decision. We never walked out. The match referee (Ranganathan) came and the play resumed as usual," he said.

DDCA general secretary Vinod Tihara said: "The match was halted for seven to eight minutes. There was nothing untoward. Our boys felt that Gill was out and that's why they asked the umpires why the decision was reversed."

The 20-year-old Punjab opener was eventually dismissed by Simarjeet Singh. Gill, after scoring 23 runs of 41 balls, was caught by Anuj Rawat. In the Elite Group A and B standings, Punjab are currently at the top with 17 points whereas Delhi are at the 11th spot with seven points.
