Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu to play for Yorkshire in WSL

Sri Lankan opener Chamari Athapaththu set to don Yorkshire Diamonds' colours in WSL

By Unnikrishnan

Bengaluru, July 28: Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu will appear for Yorkshire Diamonds in the Women's Super League after the English club named her as a replacement for Australian opener Beth Mooney. She is the first Lankan woman to play in the WSL.

Athapaththu shot into prominence after scoring 178 against Australia in a league game at Bristol. She was adjudged the man of the match despite Sri Lanka losing the game.

The WSL begins on August 10 and at Diamonds she will have some fine company in Jenny Gunn, Katherine Brunt and Lauren Winfield, vital cogs in the England team that recently won the ICC Women's World Cup.

Other overseas players at Yorkshire are New Zealand's Sophie Devine and South Africa's Sune Luus. "It's a great opportunity and I hope to cash in on this. Hopefully, I can contribute to the Diamonds' success with a few good knocks," said Athapaththu.

In the Womens' World Cup, Athapaththu was Sri Lanka's highest run-getter with 311 runs from seven games at a shade over 51. In fact, Australia's Women's Big Bash teams too have set an eyes of Athapaththu after her stellar effort in the World Cup and also for her career strike rate hovering above 91.

Yorkshire will begin their campaign against Lancashire Thunder on August 11 at Headingley, Leeds.
