WPL Strategic Timeout: Partner, Rules, History of Strategic Timeout ahead of Women's Premier League

Strategic timeout was first introduced in the men's edition - Indian Premier League season 2 in 2009 as 7 minutes and 30 seconds break for each side.

WPL Strategic Timeout Partnership

New Delhi, February 27: CEAT on Monday (February 27) was announced as the Strategic Timeout Partner for the inaugural Tata Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023, scheduled to start on March 4.

CEAT, India's leading tyre manufacturer, bagged the rights as the strategic timeout partner for the next three years, starting with the upcoming edition of WPL, which will see five teams battle for the title.

Strategic timeout was first introduced in the men's edition - Indian Premier League season 2 in 2009 as 7 minutes and 30 seconds break for each side.

However, after the timeout came under mass criticism as it hampered the momentum of the team, the IPL management decided to shorten and split the timeout from the following season in 2010.

What is a strategic timeout?

A strategic timeout is similar in concept to timeouts in other sports like basketball. It is taken by teams during the game in order to restrategise.

How many strategic timeouts do WPL teams get?

Like the IPL, both teams get one strategic timeout in each innings. The bowling team can use their strategic timeout between sixth over and the ninth, while the batting team have to use theirs between overs 13 and 16.

How long do each strategic timeout last?

Each strategic timeout in WPL will last for 2 minutes and 30 seconds, totalling to 10 minutes in the match.

Coming back to CEAT's relationship with cricket, the three-year contract marks another milestone in CEAT's long relationship with Indian cricket, be it as the strategic timeout partner for IPL, the Women's T20 challenge, bat sponsorships

Apart from those deals, CEAT also has association with leading cricketers including Harmanpreet Kaur, Captain of the Indian Women's Cricket Team and the Mumbai Indians team.

This year marks the first time that there will be a full-fledged Women's Premier League, a clear indicator of the growing traction and affinity for women's cricket in India.

Commenting on winning the rights, Mr Lakshmi Narayanan B, CMO, CEAT Tyres said, "We are proud to cement our partnership with BCCI as the strategic timeout partner to Women's Premier League.

"Over the years, we have seen a significant rise in interest in the women's game bolstered by some fantastic performances from our women in blue.

"We hope that through this association we can play a pivotal role in giving a fillip to the game and creating a huge fan base."

The first edition of WPL will be played in Mumbai across two venues - Brabourne Stadium in Churchgate and D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The debut match of WPL will be hosted by DY Patil Stadium in Nerul, Navi Mumbai.

The inaugural season of WPL will witness the participation of 5 teams: Mumbai Indians (MI), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Gujarat Giants (GG), UP Warriorz (UPW), and Delhi Capitals (DC).
