Barcelona already open to selling star forward: Should Xavi offload him?

Bengaluru, Jan 13: Memphis Depay has signed for Barcelona just six months ago, but speculations over his exit are already mounting. From being one of the pillars of Koeman’s project, Depay reportedly has become one without a role under Xavi.

In light of his recent downfall, the Spanish are said to be considering scenarios in which they move Depay into the market. As per the latest reports, Atletico Madrid reportedly have been alerted with the situation and they reportedly are keeping a close tab on the situation.

Depay's Barcelona stint so far

The 27-year-old signed for Barcelona on a free transfer after his contract with Olympique Lyon expired last summer. Following the departures of Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, he was poised to take over the mantle of being the main man in attack. But after a strong start to his career at Camp Nou, Depay has been alarmingly inconsistent.

He has eight goals and two assists in 22 appearances across all competitions so far this campaign but quite a few of those goals have come from the penalty spot. Furthermore, none of his goals came in the dreadful Champions League season this year. Things have gone from bad to worse for him, under Xavi Hernandez with the Spaniard now preferring Luuk De Jong ahead of him.

Should Barcelona sell him?

Following the arrival of Ferran Torres this month and a possibility of Alvaro Morata joining the club next, Depay's prospect at first-team opportunity could be more limited. At such a stage, selling him off at his high stake will be a smart move.

Depay only signed a two-year contract with the club last summer and so the next transfer window of the year could be the last opportunity for them to recoup a handy sum from his sale. The club have reportedly put a €30 million tag on his shoulder. Atletico who have a recent history of conducting business with Barcelona should be fine with the fee and a summer move could materialise if the talks progress steadily.
