Cannavaro failed dope test due to medication?

Rome, Oct 9: After reports of the Italy's national team captain Fabio Cannavaro failing dope test hit the media, the Juventus medical team jumped to the rescue of the ace footballer stating that an anti-allergy injection given to him could have led to him testing positive.

Media reports suggest that Juventus has alerted the National Olympic committee (CONI) that Cannavaro was treated with cortisone (a banned substance) injection after he was stung by a hornet.

The Bianconeri staff have also reportedly explained that the sting if left untreated could have proved to be fatal.

"On that occasion, it was necessary to administer medication in order to prevent complications or even death," the official website reads.

"The player and the Juventus medical staff will be in the courts in order to clarify this matter, including any documentary errors, as soon as possible," the statement adds.

Now, whether 36-year-old defender will play for Italy's final World Cup qualifier against Cyprus next Wednesday, Oct 14 will depend on the length of time spent reviewing the situation.
