Atletico, Barca in Lisbon
Two La Liga sides -- Atletico Madrid and Barcelona -- will be in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals this week in Lisbon. Barcelona will meet Bayern Munich in the next round, while Atletico Madrid have a date with RB Leipzig.
Atletico Madrid had already booked their place in the final eight in March with their win over defending champions Liverpool, before Barcelona eliminated Napoli with a 3-1 second leg result that secured a 4-2 aggregate win.
Pablo is back
Pablo Machin is back in La Liga with the former Girona, Sevilla and Espanyol coach now taking over at Alaves.
He has signed on a one-year deal with the Basque club and will now take charge for the club's centenary season in Spain's top division.
Gustavo joins Barca
Brazilian forward Gustavo Maia has joined Barcelona, arriving from Sao Paulo FC for a deal that will cost the Catalan club €4.5m.
Although the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic prevented Maia from ever playing a first team match for the Brazilian side, the 19-year-old is so highly rated that Barcelona have jumped to secure his signing and slapped a €300 million release clause in his contract.
Sevilla eye Europa record
Sevilla's bid for a record sixth Europe League title is still alive, after Los Nervionenses beat Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 in the quarterfinals at the neutral MSV-Arena (Germany) 1-0.
Lucas Ocampos punished Raul Jimenez's early penalty miss with a late winner to to set up a last-four clash with Manchester United.
