Southampton eye Rodgers for vacant manager post

Celtics boss Brendan Rodgers

Kolkata, March 14: Premier League strugglers Southampton are poised to test Brendan Rodgers’ desire to stay as Celtic boss.

Reports in England claim that the English side’s vice-chairman of football Les Reed, who advises Chinese owner Gao Jisheng, is a big admirer of Rodgers.

After the sacking of flop Argentinian Mauricio Pellegrino, he has reportedly placed the history making Hoops gaffer high among his list of replacements.

Rodgers signed a four-year deal at Celtic in April, 2017, worth close to £2.5 million a year.

That salary and likely seven-figure compensation figure would not deter Saints, who face a huge fight to maintain their top flight status.

Rodgers, also linked with Arsenal, is homing in on an unprecedented second successive clean sweep in the Scottish Premiership. That chance to make further history could yet be enough to ensure he resists a move by Southampton.

Saints chief Reed sees his brand of attacking football, ability to improve players, like Rodgers dramatically has at Celtic since May 2016, and tactical nous as being perfectly suited for the St Mary’s Stadium.

But Rodgers may well believe he can do better than Southampton if and when the time comes to leave Celtic. For an example, Arsenal are also linked with a move for him.

Sacked Watford boss Marco Silva is another name under strong consideration for the Saints board who has done more than a pretty decent job in the Premier League so far.

Since their promotion to the Premier League, Southampton gradually cemented a top-half place for themselves even finishing inside top six on two occasions but their stock has fallen this season dramatically and a manager like Rodgers could change their fortunes if the Saints can convince him to move to south coast.
