Bhat, Ouseph top attractions for Tata Open tourney

Mumbai, Jul 26 (UNI) Arvind Bhat of PSPB and Gayatri Vartak of Maharashtra were today named top seeds in the 1st Tata Open All India Badminton Tournament scheduled to be held at the Bombay Gymkhana from July 27 to 31.

England Number one Rajeev Ouseph was seeded second and will be one of the star attractions in the tournament that has attracted over 200 entries. P Kashyap of PSPB and Anand Pawar of Air India were seeded Number three and Number four, respectively.

Among the women, Aparna Balan of PSPB was seeded Number two, Neha Pandit of Maharashtra was seeded third and Dhanya Nair of Railways is Number four.

In the men's doubles, India's top pair Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar were seeded Number one, while Jwala Gutta and Shruti Kurien were named women's doubles top seeds.

In addition, all the country's top juniors will feature in the competition, as they warm up for the Youth Commonwealth Games that will be held in Pune in September. The players to watch out for are national junior boys' champion Guru Sai Dutt of Andhra Pradesh and Aditya Prakash of Karnataka.

Among the junior girls are, Sikki Reddy and PC Thulasi, who are expected to impress, especially after their recent month-long training stint in Indonesia. The juniors will be keenly watched by national coach P Gopichand.

The qualifying rounds will be held at the Bombay Gymkhana and the CCI on July 27 and 28, while the main draw will kick off on July 29 at the Bombay Gymkhana.

Women: 1 Gayatri Vartak (Mah), 2 Aparna Balan (PSPB), 3 Neha Pandit (Mah), 4 Dhanya Nair (Rlys).

Doubles: 1 Jwala Gutta (PSPB)/Shruti Kurien (PSPB), 2 Ruth Misha/Saumya Padhye (Ktk).
