Euro 2012: Fernando Torres wins Golden Boot award

Kiev, Jul 2: Spain striker Fernando Torres won the Euro 2012 Golden Boot award as joint top-scorer after a goal and an assist in the 4-0 win over Italy at the Euro 2012 finals in Kiev.

Torres, who came in as a substitute for Cesc Fabregas in the 75th minute, scored the third goal in the 84th minute and created Juan Mata's goal in the 88th minute. The Chelsea strikers tally of three goals and an assist was equal to Germany's Mario Gomez, but due to less minutes played, Torres was awarded under UEFA's tiebreaker criteria.

Torres, who scored two goals against Ireland, became the only player to have scored in successive European championship finals after scoring the winner at the Euro 2008 finals in Vienna.

Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata, who made his first appearance in Euro 2012, scored the final goal courtesy of Torres' cheeky pass in the 88th minute.

Apart from Torres and Gomez, Italy's Mario Balotelli, Alan Dzagoev of Russia, Mario Mandzukic of Croatia and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal also scored three goals at Euro 2012.

Spain became the only team to retain the European Championship trophy and the only team to have won three major final tournaments.
