Gagan Narang to speak to NRAI about allegations against him

By Sujata Sarkar

Bengaluru, Oct 10: Abhinav Bindra, led by review committee, set up by National Rifle Shooters Association (NRAI) following the disastrous performance by all the 12 shooters in the Rio Olympics, has criticised the participants' attitude, lack of planning and even in some players' case wastage of government's financial grant which was exclusively provided for the participants' preparation for their respective events in the Olympics.

Renowned shooters like Hina Sindhu and Gagan Narang also have been criticised. Sindhu has been blamed for lack of her understanding with the national shooting coach while Gagan has been accused of hiding his ankle injury.

The review committee has mentioned in its report that the Kazakhstan coach of national shooting team for Rio Games, appointed by the SAI and the shooting federation, had made a complaint against Narang saying that the bronze medallist in the London Olympics did not follow coach's instruction and even the training schedule set by the coach during the preparation for the Olympics.

Narang however, refused to make a comment on the report. When contacted, he only said, "I have read the report. I will first talk to the NRAI bosses and then I can talk to media."

Hina on the other hand has welcomed the report and she said, "The report has given a lot of suggestions on how we can improve in future. So, I feel this report does not only comprise our criticisms. It has also a constructive part and I have taken that portion."

The review committee has given her a suggestion that in future she should think choosing one event among the two she participated in Rio. That is either 10 meter pistol shooting or 25 meter pistol shooting.

When asked about this issue, Hina said, "I cannot decide one event immediately. In the next February, World Championship will take place in New Delhi. I can say, I will compete in both the events in the World Championship. If I fail in any of the events, especially, in my new event, 25 metre then I will start thinking of choosing one event out of the two."
