Chennai, Nov 16: After a series of draws in the four consecutive games, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen managed to defeat the world chess champ Vishwanathan Anand in the fifth game on Friday. Playing with white pieces, Carlsen is up by one point at 3-2.

The World Chess Championship saw its first result as Norwegian Magnus Carlsen defeated Indian veteran chess player Viswanathan Anand in the fifth game of the tournament on Friday.

Carlsen who was playing with white pieces is now 3-2 up in the tournament. Sources say that Anand had a tough time maneuvering his moves a the later half of the game as compared to the beginning when he had a perfect balance on the board. He had already lost a pawn and tried a move that had given him brownie points over the opponent; but, not this time.

Carlsen's patent strategy of mesmerizing the opponents by giving them safe positions to allow them to make mistakes got the better of Anand. Anand confesses that he was carried away by the checks he had got to his king in the fourth game. However on the 47th move, he got tempted to push the king away, but overlooked the following moves that were a sure shot win for the opponent.

Here's hoping that he wins back the game, as he always does after losing one.
