Bengaluru, Sep 10: On Saturday morning (September 10), India woke up to the news of a gold medal clinching historic moment from 21-year-old high jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu at Rio Paralympics 2016 in Brazil. (Who is Thangavelu?)
Full list of Indian athletes for Paralympics
Thangavelu, from Tamil Nadu, created history on Friday (September 9) (Early Saturday morning in India) by becoming India's first ever gold medallist in Paralympics high jump.
President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cricketers, athletes, actors and several others took to the micro-blogging website Twitter to congratulate and praise Thangavelu's golden effort in high jump T42 event. They also congratulated Varun Singh Bhati, who took bronze in the same event.
"India is elated! Congratulations to Mariyappan Thangavelu on winning a gold & Varun Singh Bhati for the bronze at the #Paralympics. #Rio2016," tweeted Prime Minister Modi.
Last month, India returned home from Rio de Janeiro without a gold. Shuttler PV Sindhu and wrestler Sakshi Malik gave India 2 medals - a silver and bronze.
Paralympics, that followed the Rio Olympics, started on September 7 and end on 18.
