Sapinder wins gold in 800 metres in Punjab Rural Sports

Bathinda, Oct 23 (UNI) Sapinder Kaur of Fatehgarh Sahib sprinted to glory by winning the first gold in athletics by touching the in 2.24.66 seconds mark in the two-lap race in the inaugural day of the three-day Punjab State Rural Games (Girls) Under-16 which got off to a colourful start here today.

Pardeep Kaur of Hoshiarpur and Navneet Kaur of Sangrur captured silver and bronze medals in 2.26.50 and 2.31.28 seconds, respectively.

Earlier, Paramjit Kaur Gulshan, Member Parliament took salute at the march-past and formally declared the Games open.

She presented a cheque of Rs 50,000 to the Bathidna District Sports Officer for the maintenance of the stadium and upliftment of sports in the district.

She also presented a cheque of Rs 5100 to District Education Officer as an award for cultural programme presented by different schools.

Earlier R P S Pawar, Principal Secretary, Department of Sports and Youth Services, welcomed the chief guest and all the dignitaries present on the stage. Punjab Sports Director Pargat Singh informed that the Sports Department had provided track suits and sports shoes to all the participants and this process of kitting would continue every year.

Twenty districts from all over the states are participating in the three-day Games. National stars Ramandeep Kaur, Suksham, Paramjit Kaur and Anita Rani lighted the sacred torch. Athlete Karamjit Kaur took the oath on behalf of all the participants.

Bathinda Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tiwari, Assistant Director Sports S L Lotey, Deputy Director Sports Jalandhar Division Hazari Lal Sharma and all the District Sports Officers were also present on the occasion.

Resutls: Kho Kho (1st round): Moga bt Fatehgarh Sahib 16-0, Gurdaspur bt Barnala 12-1, Amrisar bt Faridkot 6-0, Sangrur bt Mansa 10-1 (one turn),Nawanshahar bt Ropar 10-1 (one turn), Mukatsar bt Kapurthala 3-2 (one turn).Kabaddi (1st round): Gurdaspurbt Patiala 50-23, Mukatsar btBarnala 60-20, Sangrur bt Bathinda 45-31, Hoshiarpur by Ludhiana 34-33, Mohali bt Nawanshahar 60-20.
