VIDEO: Pro surfer Mick Fanning attacked by shark during event; Dale Steyn calls him 'hero'

Port Elizabeth (South Africa), July 19: Australia's professional surfer Mick Fanning had a narrow escape from a shark attack during the J-Bay Open Men's Samsung Galaxy Champions Tour #6 on Sunday. (Scroll down to watch the video)

A video on the tournament's official Twitter handle shows the triple world champion attacked by a shark in Jeffreys Bay in Eastern Cape during the final round on July 19. This scary footage was captured on live TV.

"I was just sitting there and I felt something just get stuck in my leg rope, and I was kicking trying to get it away' said Fanning of the encounter," Fanning was quoted as saying about the incident.

"I just saw fins. I was waiting for the teeth," Fanning, who is nicknamed "White Lightning" added.

"Sharks are in the lineup. @Mick_Fanning is OK. The #JBayOpen Final is on STANDBY," the tournament's twitter handle wrote.

In another tweet, it said, "Due to the shark incident, #JBayOpen has been called OFF for the day. The athletes are unharmed."

"Shark at #JBayOpen. Thankfully, Mick Fanning is unharmed," another tweet read.

South African fast bowler Dale Steyn too reacted after watching the video. He hailed Fanning as a hero. "Mick! Ur my new hero.," he tweeted.

Due to this incident the event was called off for the day.
