Bengaluru/Doha, February 26: Iga Swiatek thrashed Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-0 to clinch the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open title at the hard-courts of Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex on a breezy Saturday (February 26) night.

With the victory at the Qatari capital, Poland's Swiatek improved her WTA head-to-head record over Estonian Kontaveit to 3-2.

The 20-year-old had won the last two matches -- at Roland Garros and the US Open -- and now has made it three from as many games.

For the records, it was Swiatek's maiden title of the season, her second WTA 1000 crown and fourth WTA singles title overall.

In an overpowering display of all-court mastery in Doha, Swiatek took just over an hour to sweep to victory and end St Petersburg champion Kontaveit's nine-match winning streak.

Her previous WTA 1000 title came in Rome last year, where she dispatched Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 6-0 in the final.

The Pole ace famously triumphed at the clay-court Grand Slam event at Roland Garros in 2020 for her first title, but she now has just as many hard-court titles as clay-court titles in her career, with two apiece.

Since her only runner-up finish on tour, at Lugano in 2019, Swiatek has dropped just 11 games in the four finals she has won as her dominance continued in the Qatari capital in the first WTA 1000-level of the year.

Kontaveit came into the match having reached more finals and won more matches than anyone on tour since the start of 2021 - this was her ninth final during that stretch, where she has prevailed in 61 matches.

But Swiatek had other ideas as she refused to fall into any of Kontaveit's traps on the day, winning a staggering 66 per cent of points returning the Kontaveit serve and saving six of the seven break points she faced.

Earlier, in the semifinals, Swiatek notched a breakthrough win over one of her toughest opponents, defeating sixth seed Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-4, 6-3 while Kontaveit had sailed past Latvia's former French Open champion and 15th seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-1, 6-4 in the other last-four enounter.

Gauff, Pegula lift doubles title

Earlier, the all-American unseeded pairing of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula took the doubles title with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 (super tie-breaker) victory over third seeds Veronika Kudermetova of Russia and Elise Mertens of Belgium.

Gauff and Pegula staged a comeback win in an hour and 40 minutes to claim the title, ending the seven-match winning streak.

WTA 1000 event

The Qatar TotalEnergies Open and Dubai Duty Free Championships alternate between WTA 1000 and WTA 500 levels each year. With Doha holding the WTA 500 designation last season, this year it was a WTA 1000.

The first WTA 1000 event of the year which featured a 56-player singles draw and 28-team doubles draw had brought the creme de la creme of WTA Tour to the Qatari capital.

The main top 10 players who missed the Doha field are world No.1 Ashleigh Barty, who opted to skip the Middle East swing, and No.4 Pliskova, who is still recovering from an ongoing hand injury that has delayed her start to the season.
