Defeated, Sharapova drops out of Rogers Cup

By Samyuktha
Cincinnati, Aug 16: Maria Sharapova has joined the long-list of players who are giving the $2-million Rogers Cup a miss.

The 2009 Rogers Cup finalist announced her withdrawal from the upcoming tennis tournament on Sunday, Aug 15, after sustaining an injury in left heel during her fight Kim Clijsters in the final of a WTAS event here in Ohio.

"I felt some pain in my foot late in the second set which kind of scared me, so I have been forced to pull out of Montreal. I am hoping I just need a few days of rest," Sharapova said.

The 15th-ranked Russian was defeated by the 27-year-old Belgian 2-6, 7-6, 6-2.

"Congratulations to Kim on a great match and great tournament, I look forward to playing her again soon. I'll definitely be back next year," she said following the match.

With this, Sharapova joins a long line of players who have already withdrawn from the tournament. While world number 1, Serena Williams is recovering from a foot surgery, her sister Venus Williams withdrew due to a lingering knee injury.

Fifth-ranked Samantha Stosur of Australia also pulled out of Rogers Cup 2010 due to a right arm injury. Problem with her elbow is keeping seven-time Grand Slam champion Justine Henin away from Montreal.
