IPL mid-season captaincy changes – From Gilchrist to Dhoni

MS Dhoni recently took over the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings from Ravindra Jadeja following the defending champions’ poor start to the IPL 2022. But this is not the first time a captain has changed in the middle of season.

In fact, the IPL has seen mid season captaincy change for 11 times including the recent one involving CSK. Here is a look at all the IPL mid-season captaincy changes.
Deccan Chargers – 2008
In the inaugural edition of the IPL, now defunct Deccan Chargers saw Adam Gilchrist take over the reigns from VVS Laxman.
Deccan Chargers – 2012
In their final appearance in IPL, Deccan Chargers once again witnessed captaincy change as Kumar Sangakkara handed over the role to Cameron White.
Mumbai Indians – 2013
Ricky Ponting gave up the captaincy of Mumbai Indians to Rohit Sharma, who led the side to the title and is still the captain of the team.
Sunrisers Hyderabad – 2014
Darren Sammy took over the reigns at Sunrisers Hyderabad from Shikhar Dhawan.
Rajasthan Royals – 2015
From one Australian to another, Shane Watson stepped down from captaincy of Rajasthan Royals and handed over the role to Steve Smith.
Punjab Kings – 2016
David Miller was replaced by Murali Vijay as the skipper of Punjab Kings.
Delhi Capitals – 2018
Gautam Gambhir handed over the Delhi Capitals captaincy to young and surging star Shreyas Iyer.
Rajasthan Royals – 2019
Steve Smith once again took over the reigns at Rajasthan Royals from Ajinkya Rahane.
Kolkata Knight Riders – 2020
Dinesh Karthik stepped down as skipper of Kolkata Knight Riders mid-way through the season with Eoin Morgan taking over the role.
Sunrisers Hyderabad – 2021
David Warner was removed as skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad and replaced by Kane Williamson.
Chennai Super Kings – 2022
Following a run of 6 defeats in 8 matches, Jadeja stepped down as skipper of the Chennai Super Kings with former captain Dhoni taking over the role.
